Retarded. As are the guys who have the Steelers going 8-8…and the guys who have them missing the playoffs all together. The Texans, 49ers, Dolphins and Falcons have no business being ranked higher than the Steelers. It is not like Ben is out the entire year, and WRs are replaceable (yes – that means Santokeo). Can't wait for the Steelers to blow out the Falcons. 27-13…and it won't be that close.

Yeah I agree with you. Even though I'm a Pens fan Malkin should be like a 90 and Fleury an 84, at best. I think Fleury sucks and gives up way too many soft goals. Crosby and Ovechkin both deserve to be around a 95. The ratings are also pretty rough of D. Doughty only a 87? Absurdly low.

Any running ability and arm strength that Dixon has is unimportant compared to his poor decision making ability and less than great accuracy. I will always bet on a QB with that makes good decisions and has great accuracy over a guy with a big arm and fast legs.

Our defense played phenomonally against the Ravens last year and we still lost because Dixon threw a terrible pick in overtime. I am not saying that Dixon is a horrible backup, he really isn't that bad. It is just that Batch's football IQ totally trumps Dixon's athleticism. Dixon has been in our system for 3 years and the guy still looks like a college QB trying to use a skill set that doesn't translate to the NFL.

totally agree dread, dixon going up against 2 sav-vy head coaches who used to be pretty good defensive coordinators in mike smith and jeff fisher(atl ,tenn) and baltimore is baltimore when it comes to defense. they'll give dixon so many different defensive looks which will confuse dixon which will lead to mistakes.
mike tomlin stating on monday the whole offensive playbook will be used with dixon is another big mistake. hines ward stated a week ago they would have to condense the playbook if dixon started. at least they play tampa bay, oh yeah, they lost or had a hard time beating the cupcake teams last season. going to be an interesting 4 weeks !

It takes five years to make a spread option guy into a real quarterback. Dixon, entering his third year, is not a real quarterback.

This is the only argument necessary. If he is not a real NFL QB, he should not be a starting NFL QB.

I agree, they should have kept Logan. The guy they should have cut is Arnaz Battle. What a worthless player.

I don't see how the words "special teams ace" apply to Anthony Madison. He does not get down the field and make big plays in coverage. Stefan Logan did more of that than Madison does. So did Andre Frazier. So do Keyaron Fox, Lawrence Timmons and James Harrison. Come to think of it, they could have cut Madison to make room for Logan, too.

The only upgrade is experience, and that is why I say put Batch in when the Steelers are in the red zone. He sees the field better than Dixon when it is compressed. Batch is too much of a target and too fragile to have him in full time. At least in the red zone Batch has three directions to throw it away.

Either way you look at it, lefty getting hurt is not good news for the steelers at QB. He was a combination of batch and dixon. Game manager but had enough experience to make a big play and avoid rookie mistakes. Dixon's big play ability is really just scrambling and running fast in an open field, which leaves him open to get hurt in critical situations to keep a drive alive. Batch doesn't really have big play making ability, and I agree, you need spectacular defense and special teams with a dominating O-Line for the game manager to work. We have neither.

I think it depends on the opponent, and the dynamic of the game. Although tag teaming QB never leads to success, maybe for the first four games the starter is determined by the opposing defense's weakness and how the game is progressing. Overconfidence and coming from behind is what makes rookies make mistakes, and running the ball while ahead can only lead to positive results later in the season. I just want to know what happens if Pouncey gets hurt.

Falcons and Bucs = Dixon starts, switch if it goes haywire later in the game.
Titans and Ravens = Batch(if Dix isn't successful in the opener) Dixon as situational player. Hopefully that'll keep defenses on their toes.

If we come out of those first 4 games at 2-2, all happiness around…..

When Chris Johnson was holding out for more money earlier in the year, it was noted the treat of a Vince Young bootleg helped greatly in the running game. It caused DE to pause momentarily giving OT time to get their mitts on them. The same could help Mendy if Dixon is at the helm. Based on an his OT lose in Baltimore, I give Dixon a chance with lots of runs and limited playcalling, similar to Ben's rookie year.

I am torn, but I will go with Dixon. Always error on a gamebreaker. The more gamebreakers you put on the field the better; however, in Dixon's case the term could be both negative and positive.

I think you can go run, run, pass and "hide" Dixon with proper playcalling by Bruce Arians. You're only issues would be crucial 3rd and longs that need to be converted to keep drives alive. That is why Leftwich was going to be a better option for us than Dixon. Now that the competition is between Dixon and Batch I don't see Charlie as having the same arm/accuracy/ability to make throws as Lefty. If Batch isn't that big of an upgrade in 3rd down passing situations then what is he bringing to the table that Dixon isn't?

Dixon is in his 3rd year though, it's time to take off the diapers. If the staff was this down on Dennis then why didn't they bring in some camp competition for him or look to trade him? If he's not capable of winning the job right now, then he's done in Pittsburgh.

I don't see Batch as a liability, which is why I'm more torn about the issue than the article I wrote may appear. Batch won't kill you but I don't think he will do anything to help you win either.

Dixon may be prone to making a mistake or two but I think he has tools that Batch doesn't that might help the team win games.

Safe is death in some sports. You either go with a guy that is very limited in his ability to help you (but is safe) or you go with a guy that has the potential to win you games (who at the same time can hurt you with mistakes). Tough call for the staff.

I guess it speaks volumes though that the organization thought so little of Dixon that they acquired Leftwich in the first place and took so long to give Dixon a look with the starters this preseason. If he doesn't start week 1 the message is clear: the organization doesn't think he can hack it in the NFL and it's time to add another young developmental QB in the offseason.

I think you are selling Batch short. He's no prize, but hes a capable NFL QB, IMO. If it were up to me, I'd probably start Dixon. But I would definitely consider Batch and won't be upset if the Steelers give him the nod. Dixon's play making ability would be a huge asset but we can not afford the critical mistake that Dixon will inevitably make. It's a tough call.

Dixon should start – purely because of the o-line deficiencies. Dixon can compensate for that with mobility.

Here's should be the game plan with Dixon: focus on the running game, move him out of the pocket intentionally to give him only 1/2 of the field to read, let him run when he feels uncomfortable throwing (don't make him what he isn't) and put in Batch when inside the red zone. I think with that recipe, the offense can put up 17-23 points per game…enough to win with a stout defense.

But, that analysis assumes that Batch, above all, can’t handle himself at QB. What’s his win/loss record for the Steelers? Who can read a blitz better? Who seemed lost against a Ravens D that disguised their looks? Batch may not be young but he certainly can make plays and would not be the huge liability you suggest.

Mendy likes to spin until the rock flies out of his hand and I don't want Batch trying to bring us back from an early deficit. Plus it would only take a few plays before he gets murdered behind that line and joins Byron on the sidelines. It's unfortunate but Dixon is the only real option and my guess is we start off 1-3. I'm setting my expectations low but hoping our defense is stifling and that Ben gets hot down the stretch.

I see your points, Dagger. I think you see what we thought we were going to see; a two headed QB situation. The difference is that the guy under center doesn't have the same arm. But on the upside, he doesn't have the elongated delivery, either. I am not certain that we are significantly worse off if they stick to their plan. I think you see Batch start because they can use the plans they were already formulating. Batch is a pocket passer prone to injury. So is Byron. Byron has the better arm, but I'd rate both Batch and Lefty as being more accurate than Dixon. (Though, Dixon might be as accurate. I'm not counting that out by any means). I think it is a good idea to start Batch and leave the 2 headed plan in tact for the season. I think in your analysis you are discounting that while they may name Batch the starter, that does not guarantee 100, 90, or 80% of the reps in the game.

I saw the jay glazer interview after searching for it….watching it makes me feel better it seems precienct. Furthermore…we're not really evaluating troy compared to his previous pre-season games. can anyone comment on how he has played in other preseasons? I dunno that he did a good job then either…or any of our defense for that matter.

I will say however, the first few games do a good job establishing what kind of defense we have. when I watched the first titans game i thought wow…troy's the only one doing anything. I really felt like the rest of our defense was lazy. And thats how it was for the rest of the year

i don't think it's time to abandon ship guys (joking). the D isn't game planning for the other team and imo it looks like starters are playing not to get hurt. especially in last nights game. the only starter really throwing himself around is timmons and maybe that's because he is the youngest one out there. Preseason is good for evaluating the second stringers and the down the line players. having said that I share your concern about the o line and also am a bit worried about special teams kick coverage.

Regarding Troy – Glazer had an interview with Clark and they discussed Troy. Clark's first impression of Troy in practice was, "This guy stinks." Troy doesn't go hard when it doesn't count. However, on game day, everything changes. I'm not worried about Troy…except that he stays healthy.

Looks like Dixon is starting now that Leftwich didn't make it out of the preseason without injury. I'm guessing even if it is a 2-3 week sprain, Lefty won't play this year. He might not make the 53 man roster.
