Wow. One of the most entertaining Penguin games in the history of the organization has put the Stanley Cup Finals series at 3-2 in favor of the Red Wings. Game 6 is Wednesday at 8:00pm in Pittsburgh.
After getting up 2-0 on the Wings, Pittsburgh let their lead slip away and eventually found themselves trailing by a goal with under 40 seconds remaining in the game. With the goalie pulled, Max Talbot tied the game with 35 seconds left to force OT. Mid-way through the Overtime marathon, Penguin forward Petr Sykora leaned over to NBC commentator Pierre McGuire (doing on-ice commentary from between the player benches) and promised that he was going to score the winning goal. In the following OT period the Penguins were awarded a PowerPlay. As he was preparing to hop onto the ice, Sykora told his teammates he was going to score and he was going to score up over Detroit goalie Chris Osgood’s glove-side shoulder. He did just that. Sykora called his shot Babe Ruth style. Called the win, called the game winning goal, and even told him teammates where he was going to put the puck into the net. Unbelievable.

The Penguins had a a few injuries during the game and were undermanned for much of the three overtimes. How did they energize themselves and regroup during overtime intermissions? Domino’s Pizza. I can’t imagine throwing down some big, sloppy pizza before I hit the ice for Triple OT in the Cup Finals but it worked for the Pens tonight.

Regardless of how the series ends up, last nights game was one of the best hockey games I ever witnessed in my entire life.
….my ass is paying for it today though. (Zzzzzzzz…..)
This game was a lot longer and more dramatic than I expected. But, it was incredibly good!
