O-Line vs Panthers
| Player | +/- | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jansen | 0/3 | Picked up where he left off last season against Miami. As far as the run game goes, we might be better off with Stephon Heyer. As far as the pass game goes...I don't know what we do with our RT position. Hopefully I'm wrong about Jansen being way past his prime and it was just lax pre-season preperation that did him in. |
| Thomas | 0/0 | Led the O-line with a scoreless performance (yikes) Thomas did his job without screwing anything up...a solid pre-season performance. If he can stay healthy, he's clearly our best guy in the interior. |
| Rabach | 0/2 | Most dissapointing performance out of the entire O-line. Last year he was by far the most consistent and aggresive offensive lineman. Today he looked like he didn't belong |
| Kendall | 1/4 | Started out looking confused...even flat out missing blocks due to lack of hustle. But later on he stepped it up with solid lead run blocking. Unfortunetly just when he was hitting his stride, JC and Betts coughed up the ball. |
| Samuels | 0/1 | Everyone saw him get bullrushed by Peppers, but otherwise he played a decent pre-season game. Would have been horrible if he gave this effort in the regular season, but for the pre-season it was acceptable |
| Portis | 1/0 | Saved Rabach's ass early on |
| Sellers | 1/1 | Pancaked a LB at the line, but also ran right past a key block. |
Aside from Samuels and Thomas, it was just an embarrassing performance all around. Kendall seemed to hit his stride in the run game by the 3rd (televised) drive but never got in sync with the passing game. Panthers defensive tackles, especially #92, just absolutely destroyed Kendall and Rabach one-on-one. Buges had to switch things up in pass protection by the end of the 2nd qtr and had Rabach and Kendall double teaming #92. Samuels did well enough against Peppers that Fox decided to stand him up and rush him up the middle a couple of times…thankfully to no avail. No question the attitude and effort was not at 100%. At no point last year during the regular season were our guys getting pushed around this badly for an entire half. When you factor in Bugel’s tragedy, I think the O-line gets a pass for this game.
Run Blocking vs Panthers
| Run Left | Run Middle | Run Right |
|---|---|---|
| 4 carries for 16 yards (4.0 ypc) | 3 carries for 0 yards | 3 carries for 17 yards (5.6 ypc) |
There was the run up the middle where Betts fumbled, I forgot to chart the yardage on that run (due to the ensuing aneurysm that followed) so it’s really 4 carries for some pathetic amount of yards. Portis showed that he still has the burst to get to the outside and Betts showed that he’s worth the above average contract he is paid. Honestly, I still don’t see why Roc isn’t our #2. Nothing against Betts, but Roc is incredibly explosive and hits holes hard, where as Betts comes off as…meh. Draw plays: 2 draws for 7 yards. One draw came on a third and long, not suprisingly draws were ineffective since the D didn’t have a passing game to worry about.
Play Action Pass: 0-0 (2 sacks, 1 fumble)
The chart shows Campbell doesn’t make stupid throws. The chart does not show that Campbell, at times, holds on to the ball way too long. One of the sacks off of the play action was 100% on J.C.
I figured Moss would be unstoppable on short underneath routes from the slot, but it looks like Randle El got to fulfill that role against Carolina. Hard to take too much away from this chart other than that. Zorn had no choice but to call quick 3 step drops and short ‘in’ and ‘hitch’ routes to help offset Carolina’s pass rush from their defensive tackles. I actually had a decent frame by frame to show about Kendall’s progression as a run blocker throughout the game but those pictures aren’t currently uploaded on my laptop and aren’t accesible right now. But defense is up tomorrow…and I got pictures of them running in directions that make no sense.
Charts start at the first televised drive. I think we missed out on the actual first drive due to CBS feed problems.
Drive I
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 18 | 1st and 10 | I-form 2WR | PA Pass | Sack | -9 |
| Jansen, Rabach and Kendall get whipped off the line. Jansen’s guy is 2nd one in on the sack, Rabach’s guy gets picked up by Portis…nice block by CP. Kendall’s man gets to JC for the sack. (Jansen, Rabach and Kendall -1, Portis +1) | |||||
| Skins 9 | 2nd and 19 | I-form 3WR | Pass | Sack | -8 |
| Samuels gets bullrushed by Peppers, but recovers nicely…considering that he’s going up against Julius Peppers. Jansen gets beat again and gives up the sack (Jansen -1) | |||||
| Skins 1 | 3rd and 27 | Ace 2WR | Run Left | Portis | 2 |
| Goodness, Jansen is just getting abused out there. Effective Rabach-Kendall zone block gives Randy Thomas a nice hole to lead block through, but Jansen can’t seal out his guy. (Jansen -1) | |||||
| Punt, 8:44 remains in the 1st qtr. Drive: Our O-line is getting pushed back like nobody’s business. Looks like they decided to go with a 50% effort tonight…at least I hope. | |||||
Drive II
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 15 | 1st and 10 | I-form 3WR | Draw Left | Portis | 2 |
| Kendall-Samuels zone block, with Kendall supposed to be getting to the 2nd level, but instead misses his block. Kendall’s guy (#52) forces Portis to switch holes where #53 is waiting for him (Kendall -1) | |||||
| Skins 17 | 2nd and 8 | I-form 2WR | Run Right | Portis | 16 |
| Sellers pancakes a LB at the line. Kendall pulls to the right and is the lead blocker, Jansen and Thomas seal. Panthers D-line stunted inside to try and stuff something up the middle. (Sellers +1) | |||||
| Skins 33 | 1st and 10 | Single Back, Twins WR | PA Pass | Sack, Fumble | — |
| Samuels gets bull-rushed Osi Umenyora style. Shame too…Cooley and Jansen picked up the overload blitz. Kinda hard to give a negative grade to someone who got beat by Julius freakin Peppers, but like, dude got owned. (Samuels -1) | |||||
| Turnover, 3:52 remains in the 1st qtr. Drive: um, Portis is still fast J | |||||
Drive III
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 24 | 1st and 10 | I-form 3WR | Pass | Illegal Formation | 0 |
| Penalty declined. Wow, Buges has Rabach and Kendall double teaming #92…who is this guy? | |||||
| Skins 24 | 2nd and 10 | Ace 3WR | Run Left | Portis | 7 |
| Kendall-Rabach zone block, with Rabach getting a hat at the 2nd level allowing Portis to get up field. Thomas-Jansen zone block with Thomas hitting the second level. (Kendall+1) | |||||
| Skins 31 | 3rd and 3 | Empty Backfield 4WR | Pass | Moss | 5 |
| Good blitz pickup by the O-line. Moss is impossible to defend one-on-one in the slot. | |||||
| Skins 36 | 1st and 10 | Offset I 3WR | Run Middle | Portis | -2 |
| #92 again. He just embarrasses Rabach, looks like the Panthers may have made the right move by letting Kris Jenkins go. Kendall had #92 double teamed with Rabach but then left to go to the second level and had nobody to hit. (Rabach -1) | |||||
| Skins 34 | 2nd and 12 | I-Form 2WR | Run Right | Portis | 5 |
| Sellers can’t get quite reach Beason in time…Thomas and Jansen do a good job of giving Portis a place to run on the right side | |||||
| Skins 39 | 3rd and 7 | Ace 3WR | Pass | Randle El | 7 |
| Peppers stands up at the line at the DT position, #92 stunts around Peppers. Good protection by the O-line. | |||||
| Skins 46 | 1st and 10 | ? | Run Left | Betts | 5 |
| CBS rather show a stat than the play | |||||
| Panthers 49 | 2nd and 5 | Ace 2WR | Run Middle | Betts | Fumble |
| Did a good job of breaking a tackle by Beason and then…fumbled. | |||||
| Turnover, 10:43 left in the 2nd qtr. Drive: That was frustrating…we actually had something going with our run blocking that drive. Coincidentally, #92 got taken out for a few plays. | |||||
Drive IV
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 22 | 1st and 10 | I-form 2WR | Run Right | Betts | -4 |
| A LB takes on both Sellers and Kendall, penetrates and breaks up the play in the backfield. Kendall tries to stiff arm him instead of block…ugly. (Kendall -1) | |||||
| Skins 18 | 2nd and 14 | Pro Set 3WR | Run Middle | Portis | -3 |
| Peppers stands up at the line again. Sellers just runs by the primary blitzer and his guy drills Portis in the backfield. Rabach got pushed back into the play as well (Sellers -1) | |||||
| Skins 15 | 3rd and 17 | FB, 3 WR | Pass | Cooley | 15 |
| Kendall gets beat and JC is forced to step up and rush his throw. Cooley does a heck of a job dragging tacklers with him. (Kendall -1) | |||||
| Punt, 6:13 left in the 2nd qtr. Drive: Coaches look for an explanation from Kendall on the sidelines. I was about to give a lot of credit to #92 for beating up our line…but even the backup DT’s are embarrassing us out there. This is just a quasi-effort all around. Toss it up to being the preseason and maybe Buges’ personal tragedy weighed heavily on the O-line tonight. | |||||
Drive V
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 20 | 1st and 10 | I-form 2WR | Pass | Randle El | 0 |
| Overthrown…JC’s deep balls have been too flat, I dunno if it’s just something we are going to have to live with or if he doesn’t know how to adjust. Betts gets a nice chip in against Peppers | |||||
| Skins 20 | 2nd and 10 | Ace 3WR | Pass | Thrash | 5 |
| O-line is able to block long enough for JC to get a quick hitch pass off. | |||||
| Skins 25 | 3rd and 5 | Ace 4WR | Pass | Randle El | 3 |
| Another Rabach-Kendall double team on #92. Good pass protection…albeit for a quick 3 step drop. | |||||
| Punt, 3:55 left in the 2nd qtr. Drive: The only thing we learned on this drive is that we are able to block the Panthers D-line for a max of 3 seconds at a time. | |||||
Drive VI
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 18 | 1st and 10 | Offset Ace 3WR | Pass | Randle El (Drop) | 0 |
| Another quick 3 step drop and throw. | |||||
| Skins 18 | 2nd and 10 | Ace 3WR | Pass | Sack | -9 |
| This one is on JC…held the ball way to long. Good protection by the O-line. | |||||
| Skins 9 | 3rd and 19 | Ace 3WR | Draw Middle | Betts | 5 |
| Nothing special of note here. Basic 3rd and long draw play. | |||||
| Punt, 1:53 left in the 2nd qtr. Drive: Dropped pass and holding on to the ball too long ended this drive quickly. | |||||

Kick ass, as always. Glad to have you back on the DVR, man.
Don’t know if you could see it, but did it look like our WRs were getting any separation out there? Were folks opening up at all? I wonder how much JC had to throw at, when he had time to throw.
Thanks!

To me,
This came down to the battle in the trenches.
we still didn’t learn much about what JC and co. will be able to do in this WCO.
