Inter-Blog Pick’em Battle

By Dagger | September 4, 2008

If you read us last year, you know we participated in a Pick ‘em contest with Redskins bloggers Will Allensworth and TexSkins from Hogs Haven, Ben from The Curly R and Brian from Common Prejudice NFL.  It seems as if the word has gotten out, the excitement has spread like wildfire and the whole world wanted in on this…..so the BloggerDeathSport Pick ‘Em Contest roster has expanded to a grand total of 10 participants.

Let’s introduce the field:

1. Eagles blogger Derek of Iggles Blog

2. Steelers blogger Blitzburgh of Behind the Steel Curtain

3, Jaguars blogger River City Rage of Big Cat Country

4. Vikings blogger Gonzo of Daily Norseman

5. Gamecocker of Horsehoe Digest (USC and NFL Panther)

6. Ben at The Curly R

7. Brian at Common Prejudice

8. TexSkins at Hogs Haven

9. Will at Hogs Haven

10. Dagger and The Team from PostGameHeroes

As you can see, we will have our hands full, but we’re confident we can pull this off.  Each week everyone makes their picks against the spread.  After the week is over, the Wins and Losses are calculated for each site and the winning blog gets to post a BRAG POST that must appear on all of the other sites in the competition.  So, huge bragging rights and the “keys to the other guy’s blog” are at stake here.

Imagine if we were to lose….you would come to PGH.com looking for some of your Steeler or Skins coverage only to have an obnoxious Jaguars or Eagles fan posting some smack on the PostGameHeroes homepage.  Let’s not let that happen. With the intro out of the way, lets get to the picks. (FYI we will link to the other sites picks once they have them up)

Winners in BOLD

WEEK 1

WAS @ NYG (-3.5)

—Giants start off with Super Bowl hangover, Jason Campbell plays well

ARZ (2.5) @ SF

—Warner puts up huge numbers, 49ers haven’t mastered Mike Martz offense yet

SEA @ BUF (-1)

—Buffalo at home, Seattle too many injuries at WR and an unsettled RB situation

CIN (-1) @ BAL

—Flacco asked to manage the game but can’t keep pace with Bengals offensive firepower

DAL (-5.5) @ CLE

—Tons of offense but Dallas wins b/c they have a better defense

DET (-3) @ ATL

—Falcons are starting a rookie QB, Kitna and his WRs roll and put up big points

CHI @ IND (-9.5)

—Big spread but Bears have no offense and the Colts will get in sync quickly

JAX (-3) @ TEN

—Jags are boring but they win games, I can only name 4 players on Titans roster

KC @ NE (off the board = no line)

—A freebie? I’ll take it. Pats pick up where they left off last regular season and dominate

TB @ NO (-3)

—Saints have a ton of offense and are at home

NYJ (-3) @ MIA

—Favre and his WRs look fantastic vs MIA and Pennington looks like well, Pennington

STL @ PHI (-7.5)

—SJAX has a huge day but Westbrook does even better, McNabb looks solid

HOU @ PIT (-6.5)

—Steelers are loaded on offense and underrated on D, Texans make it close though

CAR @ SD (-9)

—No Steve Smith, no win.  LT goes bonkers

DEN (-3) @ OAK

—Too many unknowns in Oakland, Denver’s Cutler plays well

MIN @ GB (-2.5)

—Vikings D dominates, Rodgers struggles, AP has big day.  We have to guess the total score here for the potential Pick ‘Em contest Tie Breaker.  17-10 total score = 27pts

Ballhype: hype it up!

Great posts guys. I love reading this blog. Just a few thoughts:
    1) I think SF might end up being the suprise team of the year. I know a new offensive coordinator isn’t usually the recipe for success but the fact the their QB came over the Martz means part of the learning curve won’t be as steep this year. The pieces for this offense have been built over the last few years — this might be a year where they start doing a little better Their defense is underrated — if they found a NT that was worth anything, they could be a top 10 defense.
    2) Oakland has a good chance of upsetting Denver. McFadden and Co. should have a field day against the undersized Broncos front line and the raider’s defense should do enough to control Cutler and his depleted WR corp.

I like Martz, but I have questions about the QB situation in SF. If they had a more proven starter, they would be a nice sleeper team. Good D, Frank Gore, some decent WRs, good TE, etc…

    Satya- two words: Eddie Royal.

Just watch and see what he’ll do.

I think I know who has Eddie Royal on their fantasy team.

As for the 49ers, they are a top-5 pick waiting to happen.
