Frame by Frame: Steelers vs Browns

OL vs Shaun Rogers
The Steelers gave up 5 tackles and a sack to DT Shaun Rogers but overall I think you’d have to say they did a pretty good job containing him and keeping him from dominating the line of scrimmage. There were occasions where he blew into the backfield and caused problems but for the most part, he wasn’t dictating where the Steelers were going with the football and perhaps more importantly, he wasn’t shoving Hartwig into Ben and collapsing the pocket.
(I put an extra 10 seconds on the video below by accident. Once the screen “freezes” at the 30 second mark, just move on to the next part of the article)

The Steelers took a tag-team approach in trying to contain DT Shaun Rogers. Most of the time it worked, but at times Rogers still found a way to make plays.

There were also occasions where Hartwig dealt with Rogers 1-on-1 and did a real nice job.
Steelers D vs Kellen Winslow
Last year, and in our pregame preview we talked about what the Steelers do to matchup with Kellen Winslow. This past Sunday we once again saw the versatility that Troy Polamalu brings to the table. TE Winslow is a guy that can beat a CB deep down the field, he can “box out” a LB in a zone, he can do all sorts of things to tear up your defense. Not only was Polamalu buzzing all over the field making “eye-opening” plays, but he also was able to quietly help keep K2 in check in and hold him to 55 total yards. Even on plays where Winslow came down with the football, Polamalu was still in perfect coverage and was on him like white on rice.

Here Troy locks up 1-on-1 vs Winslow as he is set up as a WR.

Here Troy kind of lingers mid-field disguising coverage with Winslow at TE.

After the snap of the ball, Polamalu follows K2.

Here is another way the Steelers dealt (unsuccessfully) with Winslow. Here he is at WR facing zone coverage on his side of the field. He will eventually find a spot between the LBs and the DBs for a big gain.

LB Lamarr Woodley hung with him for the first 5-10 yards past the line of scrimmage but Winslow got deep in a hurry.

Here Winslow takes advantage of some soft zone in the middle of the field. On 2nd and 11 the Steelers wre smart to give him a few yards to set up 3rd and long.
Kemoeatu has a reputation already?
Anyone else notice that the Chris Kemoeatu bandwagon is filling up rather quickly? Heading into week 1 the sky was falling because we had lost Alan Faneca and some guy named Chris Kemoeatu was coming in to replace him. What ever shall we do??? Well, it took about 3 drives before the Week 1 TV announcers were all over Kemo. Over the next few days the media and a few spots on the internet were starting to take notice. Week 2 rolls around and Michaels and Madden are fawning over the guy. 3 days later he’s everyone’s favorite Lineman. We couldn’t be happier and we are proud that we were spreading the Kemo love from day 1.
Check out the following video. Any chance this Browns DB saw game film on Kemo pulling last week and WANTED NONE OF IT! Guy practically runs away with his tail between his legs.
Not exactly selling out on 4th and 1. You need to come up here, challenge, try to shed the block, and make a play.

Great job by Heath Miller to seal the edge.

Look at the DBs knee bend and foot position. He is literally heading in the opposite direction.

Here is another play from later in the game. Kemo pulls and gets his hands into Willie McGinest. Willie gets dominated (of course) but at least he sticks his nose in there.

The final screen isn’t here but Willie gets taken for a ride that begins at the 48 yard line and ends at about the 38 yard line.

Yeah, I noticed several replays during the game of Kemo helping out on Rodgers, esp. that one where Hartwig has Rodgers stood up and Kemo blast him 5 yards down the line, SWEET. Kemo took Rodgers 1 on 1 on several plays and actually pushed Rodgers back. We should have signed him before the year…looks like he’s gonna get a fat contract next year, and not by us. It’s kind of a double edge sword, you want the guy to be a beast and because he is in his final year, he’ll cash out.

Maybe Pool was guarding against the HB pass, just in case.

I think if we keep the Browns winless against us and they have a bad year Rodgers will lose his motivation and not play his best ball. This game will probably end up being the best he ever has against us.
Once the Browns start losing more he will give up.

Good stuff. You guys were certainly sounding the “Chris K siren” before anyone else. Good call.

I was also telling people not to worry about Faneca…because that’s what I read here. Any chance he gets signed at the end of the year? Is there anyone behind him that could step in?

The Steelers never extend players mid-season…but I would make an exception for Kemo and Marvel. Take those 2 off the OL and what does our line look like next year? Awful. Our core talent on Offense and Defense is too good to rob them of a few legit deep playoff runs/Super Bowl runs over the next few years by letting the OL fall by the wayside.
Darnell Stapleton is a guy the coaches like but he’s more of a Center than a guard. Tre Essex is a guy who has had mixed reviews. The Steelers could look to the draft or Free Agency (free agency. ha. yea right).
They have no choice but to extend Smith and Kemo. One of the 2 might get a franchise tag this offseason…that is an option that remains open.

Maybe once the ownership turmoil is resolve, which may happen this week, they will be able to operate more decisively to sign some people.

Why is it a foregone conclusion the Kemo is gone? Is it beyond the realm of possibility that he want to stay a Steeler?

chris is a prfect fit for the steelers. he just has a slight temper problem. noticed the penalty during the super bowl. thats how he do though. he likes lighting people up then down. that db from the browns used better judgment on that play. he who fight and run away lives to fight another day. what a whoooosss. so much for the team concept. I just enjoy watching him pull and destroy. im sure everybody in pitsburgh does to. kahuku pride
