Defensive Breakdown: Skins vs Saints

In an effort to generate pressure against a sub-par pass protecting offensive line, Blache got creative with his blitzes and probably focused in on trying to confuse the offensive line similar to how Tampa Bay did in Week 1:

In the above frame, Rocky walks over the inside reciever hence making it look like he’s drawing coverage on him.  Landry is creeping up to the line, and Fletch is lined up in his normal spot indicating that he is drawing coverage on Bush.

In the next frame, Rocky abandonds his coverage look and comes in on the blitz.  Fletch shifts over to cover Rocky’s man.  Landry bails to take on his Cover 1 responsibility

With the lineman possibly not accounting for Rocky comming in on the blitz (thinking he had coverage) Rocky ends up practically untouched and forces Brees to go to his checkdown reciever (Bush) on 3rd and 20.

The video puts it all together:

[Table=127]

The yards per carry average for runs up the middle is pretty skewed by 2 runs that went for 9 yards each late in the 1st half when we were in a prevent defense.  So really the Saints averaged more like 2.8 ypc up the middle.  This is one bad run offense.  They couldn’t stretch runs outside last year and they look like a high school team trying to do it this year.  It also doesn’t help that Bush takes 10 too many steps on stretch plays before finally cutting it upfeild.  Get Bush in space and he’s amazing, but ask him to execute a simple stretch play…and he looks like he’s waiting for Moses to open up a hole for him.  The Saints were #1 at running plays between the guards last year and performed well in that area in week 1 against Tampa, but this week Griffin and Golston were having none of it.  Montgomery was another story…I’ve never seen a poorer effort from him before.  I’m chalking it up to just a bad game on his end and not something that is indicative of things to come.  Horton looked good against the run when he was placed in the box.  He shot through gaps quickly and made solid tackles.  However…in Doughty’s defense, and my goodness is that hard to do…Horton was playing with an incredibly improved defensive line.  I would imagine Doughty would’ve put up different results had our D-line performed half as good against the Giants as they did against the Saints.

Kedric Golston

Kedric Golston played one of the better games of his career.  Right away, on the second play of the Saints 1st drive, Golston puts a sick swim move on the lineman and gets a hand in Brees’ face.

The following frame shows where Golston is lined up in this video (yet another great job by Golston.)  Also notice the short routes run on that play…Blache had his guys up close, ready to shut down all those dink and dunk routes.

Golston can adjust from rushing the QB to playing coverage…nice read by the big man here.

Against the run Golston did a solid job of holding up the point of attack.  In the following play Golston scrapes up the line, taking his blocker with him en route to the RB:

Golston scrapes down the line, Horton meets the lead blocker at the hole (with Rocky in shedding a block to maintain pursuit as well) and Chris Wilson holds up the outside and keeps contain:

Andre Carter provides backside pursuit:

Video of the play

Cornelius Griffin also did his share of scraping and making plays at the line.  The following frame has Griffin circled to show where he is lined up in this video:

Montgomery meanwhile easily played the worst game of his career.  Golston, Griffin and even Alexander played consistent and gave good effort.  Montgomery, aside from the 1st defensive play of the game, got pushed around all day long.  The following frame shows where he is lined up in the video

The next 2 frames show Montgomery getting completely pushed out of the play when they ran it right at him:

The boxed guy in above and below frames is Montgomery…it’s almost like he teleported or something

Brees spread the ball all over the field, mainly working his underneath targets.  Fletch is usually the guy with zone coverage on underneath routes in between the numbers, hence the highest number of targets.  Smoot gave up the highest yards per target with 12.  Evans was targeted twice on an inexcuseable strategy that occured on the Saints final drive before the half.  3 plays in a row we put Demetric Evans one-on-one with Reggie Bush and twice Brees targeted that match up for 18 yards en route to a field goal.  Horton made plays in the secondary, but also at the line.  The following frame sets up this video in which Horton literally gets under an offensive lineman and runs through him into the backfield.  Horton has to get some kind of increase in playing time at Doughty’s expense from here on out

[Table=128]

12 total blitzes, 2 on 1st down, 5 on 2nd down and 5 on 3rd down.  Rocky, Fletch and Horton were the most commonly sent blitzers.  HUGE EDIT:  that blitz sequence I took you through at the beginning of this post…replace Fletch with Rocky…and Rocky with Fletch.  Everything else is still the same.  It’s late and I goofed on that one.

Pressures:  Golston, Griffin and Taylor (!) with 2 each.  Carter, Wilson and Fletch with 1 each.  Good to see Taylor improve his pass rush.  This D-line seems to be getting deeper with Golston and Taylor stepping it up this week.

Stunts:  Taylor and Carter with 2 each

Defelctions:  Fletch, Taylor and Evans (led to Horton’s 2nd INT)  with 1 each.

Defensive Chart:  By the way…I’m probably not going to be able to have a preview up for the Arizona game.  I’ll try for a Saturday post, but most likely it aint happening this week.  Ben at Curly R should have something good though.

Fumble, 6:23 remains.  Drive:  Blache is really mixing things up today.  A lot of people at the line…probably a combination of the short routes and what I talked about in the preview: the Saints pass protection does not handle different looks well.

Thanks i like the videos and the breakdown of our defense. Good to see our defense getting healthy i think montgomery will bounce back once his hand is 100%

  • Hateoffseason

Dillweed…you are a prophet! Last week I questioned that you were the only one I’ve seen praising Golston. This week he has an incredible game. Didn’t always make the play, but he was always forcing it. He beat his offensive lineman like a drum the entire game.

Love the use of stills to set up exactly what you want us to see in the video. Keep it coming.

  • Steve

Can’t thank you enough, Dillweed. I look forward every week to your posts. This must be the best reference their is, professional or amateur, for breakdowns of Skins’ games.
As for our D, it’s good to see Blache bringing some exotic looks. I am worried about the Cards’ passing game, but if the line keeps up their pressure, Blache draws some more good strategy, and Landry keeps growing his legend, I think we have a shot.
I also wasn’t buying all the Horton love this past week, since it seemed he mostly got lucky on the turnovers, but after watching his nose for the ball in your videos, I am starting to turn over. Doughty better step up his game big time or I think he’s going to start seeing the bench.

  • Dillweed

SMB – Hand injury…ah, yep that could be a reason why he gave up leverage a lot during the game.

Offseason – ha, I just hope the big man can keep it up…It really changes the dynamic of our line when someone can disrupt the interior a la Griffin 2004

Steve – We were pretty vanilla against the Giants with our blitzes, but Greg Williams’ staff always seemed to step it up with the creativity in out of conference play. You said it with Horton…he did have a nose for the ball and also showed some things that you normally wouldn’t expect from a 7th (right?) rounder.

  • je suis un pizza

I too was astonished with how poorly Monty played. When he’s motivated he can be dominant, but it looks like FedEx Field was the last place he wanted to be on Sunday. Perhaps because of the heat. He needs to correct whatever was wrong.

  • NewCliche

    You are a god.

Thank you so much for these breakdowns! The videos make it so much easier to follow and to explain to my friends who don’t understand how football works.

  • Daniel

The lack of a Redskins Cardinals preview is the saddest news I’ve heard all week- after discovering this site all other forms of analysis seem infantile

  • jwsleep

Hope it’s just Monty’s hand. But the emergence of Golston is a big deal, if he keeps it up. If we can get middle pressure without a blitz, man, that’s good news!

Alexander seems to be coming on as well. Hopefully James will find his mojo, which he left in college, apparently.

Props to Horton and to HP!

  • shally

    great stuff, thanks…

what do you think is up with monty ? yesm his hand is hurt. but his play has fallen off and it has obviously been noticed by blache since camp.

what gives ? everyone thought he had turned the corner. now he has “permanent tease” written all over him..

  • Young

AMazing stuff. Thanks for the education. i always get a better understanding of our team when i come here.
