Can We Hate Some Other People Too? Please.

Remember when you were a kid and you would try to win an argument or make a point with the phrase “infiniti x infiniti”? Well, I am most certainly the “infiniti x infiniti” blogger, journalist, talking head to weigh in on Michael Vick’s unfortunate hobby and almost finalized legal proceedings.

To be clear, I could care less about his football future (hey, I am not the idiot who drafted him in my fantasy league), nor am I so outraged by his dog fighting empire. I love animals just like everyone else, but hey, there is a TON of bad stuff going on in this world. I’d rather protest Darfur instead of a QB with a low completion percentage. But from the outset, this case has done nothing but show me what a bunch of hypocrites sports fans are. I am sorry, but the NFL, MLB, and NBA has a lot worse criminals than this guy. And it’s not just the ones who murder people.

Why are we mad that Vick and his buddies killed dogs, but St. Louis Rams fans can cheer a sack by Leonard Little? He got drunk, killed a woman with his car, barely got in trouble, and got arrested for DUI again without serious consequence.

Tony Larussa was so drunk after a spring training game this year, he passed out at a stoplight, and was arrested for DUI. He not only managed the Cardinals the next day, the fans gave him a standing ovation!

And it’s not just the drunk drivers.  We can look past Brett Myers beating his wife.

Brett Myers

Are people more upset with Vick, or with Mark Chmura, who did some not so nice things with a drunk 17 year old?

Chmura

I am pretty sure Ron Mexico is a scumbag. Fine. But it says a lot about our culture, when drunk driving and wife beating doesn’t get anywhere near the same scorn as running a dog fighting operation.

I know one thing, Tony Larussa is more dangerous to me and the people I care about than Michael Vick.

Ballhype: hype it up!

I love my dog more than my wife….I’d never hit my dog.

I nominate to hate on Vick some more, please…. Dogs are defenseless. They have no real means to protect themselves against man. Yes, their sharp teeth give a mean bite, but ultimately the man will win. If you aren’t outraged by Vick’s dog fighting empire then you don’t love animals like everyone else, you just like them. Shouldn’t use the “L” word if you don’t mean it. I agree, the American culture is slowly deteriorating, however that isn’t the issue at hand. A dog is a loyal friend and ONLY asks in return love and food. You must be fucked up in the head to get any sort of enjoyment and pleasure in torching animals. I don’t wish ill on others, however under these circumstances, I hope he gets some one on one time from back in the pen…

RIC – Like I said, Vick is a scumbag…and deserves what ever his punishment is. I am just curious about the disconnect, where Tony Larussa is going to KILL A PERSON, and gets outward signs of support, and Vick gets OJ treatment. In 2006, 17,602 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes – an average of one every half-hour. This is less a commentary about Vick, but more about what we view as bad behaivor. NO ONE thinks Larussa should be in jail. Isnt that a problem?

    This is obviously a race-related issue…

    It always is…

C-Note: It’s not that no one thinks Larussa should be in jail, its that American culture has become immune to the obvious bad behavior. I understand where you are coming from and agree. It is a shame domestic violence, DIUs, murders are broken records.

last commment, my point is…this issue has it’s own merit and duly warrants full coverage and exposure it doesn’t matter who the actual culprit it, it could be any Joe Schmo.

I love how this Vick thing has overshadowed what this NFL season is going to bring. Anytime a star athlete gets caught for killing animals, murder(Ray Lewis, Little, & OJ), steroids(Palmeiro, McGuire, Bonds), and other things that story becomes bigger than the excitement of the sport.

Big A: One hopes murdering would trump the excitement of sports…. Wait till your dog or loved one is killed because you won’t care so much what the NFL season is going to bring. (no hostility intended)

I tend to agree, these things get publicity because they ARE bigger than the sport. These are “real life ” things. They SHOULD overshadow a GAME. If sports becomes more important than murder, crime, social norms, etc…then we have a problem as a nation.
