Sackmaster: Week 5 (Steelers vs Jaguars)

Sack #1 – 1st quarter – 13:40 – 2nd and 10 – 3 WR’s strong left – 4 man rush

Colon: Loses too much ground from at the snap vs. DE Harvey – however he does recover using his strengh and does his part to form a pocket.

Stapleton: Doubles against DT Meier with Hartwig and does very good job

Hartwig: Does good job doubling on DT Meier with Stapleton

Kemo: Begins to drop into pass pro vs. DT Henderson, and for some reason looks inside as if he was expecting the LB or safety blitz, or Hartwig to release Meier to him. He still has plenty of time to recover as Henderson somewhat ropes towards the outside – and he doesn’t make the decision quick enough as Henderson gets to Ben’s legs

Smith: Drops into pass pro – has help from Miller on the outside, and blocks Spicer from the inside.

Miller: Doubles with Smith on DE Spicer

Ben: Had a pocket and had time and room, but Henderson should have been picked up and ben was expecting he would be. He makes nice effort to get the ball out to an open Moore.

Thoughts:
Jacksonville threatened to send 7 but backed off and came with their front 4 at the snap. Everyone on the line was doing a solid job except Kemo blew it against Henderson.

Sack #2 – 3rd quarter – 2:49 – 3rd and 12 – 3 WR’s strong right RB flanked left (shotgun) – 4 man rush

Colon: Is not quick or fast enough for DE Hayward on this play because of Hayward’s very wide split outside. Colon does his part to form a pocket.

Stapleton: Very sold pass pro vs. DT Meier.

Hartwig:
Doesn’t block anyone. He has no one lined up in front of him and with only 4 pass rushers drops waiting for someone to stunt inside.

Kemo: Does ok job forming pocket, but is beat off the ball and certainly have been called for holding

Smith: Has DE Groves lined up outside of him and Groves stunts inside, where he is met by Russell out of the backfield. Smith tries to reposition himself to block Groves after the Russell help but at this time Ben has already left pocket, and Smith is no match for Groves in that open field matchup

Russell: Good job meeting Groves in the hole at the LOS, his responsibility then was to leak downfield as a receiver

Miller: Totally whiffs on Hayward in his attempt to help Colon outside

Ben: Maybe left pocket too soon, and had an open Russell if he could have gotten the ball away

Thoughts:
This was a 4 man rush on third and long where Ben was simply trying to make something happen. He probably left the pocket too soon, he could have had the dump of to Miller or Russell had he been more patient, and in a way he ran into this sack. But there was no one open downfield for the 1st, Miller or Russell probably would have come up short, and once again, Ben was just trying to make a play. I have a hard time pinning this on Smith or Russell, only because they were just carrying out their assignments, and Colon was doing his part to form a pocket. Miller threw the most pathetic block on the play, so I am going to give Ben the benefit of the doubt and give this one to Miller, only because of his poor ass effort.

Sack #3 – 4th quarter – 13:58 – 1st and 10 – 5 WR set (Miller in slot) strong left (shotgun) – 5 man rush

Colon: Good solid pass pro in forming a pocket – when Ben rolls to his right Colon stands no chance in keeping up with DE Harvey

Stapleton: Decent pass pro vs. DT Meier – gets beat inside but he still does his part to maintain a pocket

Hartwig: Lets DT McDaniel go after initiating contact and McDaniel stunts around to space vacated by DT Meier

Kemo: Drops in his pass pro and goes to take on LB Peterson – LB beats Kemo but is more of a “spy” role on this play and chooses to roam the LOS instead of to penetrate the pocket.

Essex: One on one with DE Spicer and loses his battle – Spicer roars around him

Ben: Rolled right to evade penetration and there was no where to go with the ball

Thoughts:
The stunt inside and the LB blitz worked against the Steelers pass pro on this play. I don’t know if Stapleton blew his responsibility and should have stayed home or not. Essex put in the lamest attempt at blocking on this play, and his man got half the sack, so I’ll go with Essex.

Totals from Sunday night:
Kemo – 1
Miller – 1
Essex – 1

In the last sack Stapleton, clearly blew his responsability, give him half the sack.

Wow, after looking at those plays, Ben had ample chance to get the ball away in each of them. In the first one, Moore leaks out and is uncovered. It’s not 3rd down, so dump it off. In the second, Ben has a perfectly fine pocket and just runs out of it. In the third, the Jags are playing safe coverages, and I can see 3 open receivers: Moore, the guy who’s crossing from the left, and the outside guy on the right doing a comeback. He pumps to the right, where 2 receivers are open, but he doesn’t throw. Honestly, I don’t know what he’s looking for.
