For many east coast football fans, it may be difficult to keep your eye on west coast games that start at 10:00pm out in California, Washington, and Arizona….and it must be REALLY hard to stay up until midnight to watch the University of Hawaii. If there was ever a reason to stay up late and watch even more football than you already do, Colt Brennan and the June Jones’ Hawaii offense is a great inducement.
For those of you not already on the bandwagon (I have been a card-carrying Hawaii fan since Timmy Chang first pulled on a uniform), you have to check these guys out. If you love passing, if you love spread offense, and if you want to catch a glimpse of the next Heisman Trophy winner and the best QB in NCAA Football, then do yourself a favor and go out of your way to watch or TiVo their games. Last night, Hawaii demolished Northern Colorado 63-6. Brennan was 34-for-40 passing with 416 yards and 6 TD passes. IN THE FIRST HALF! This is an amazing stat-line, but Matt Leinart’s former high school teammate has been putting up startling numbers like this for a few years now, and many football fans around the country have never even heard of him. Brennan finished 6th in voting for the Heisman last year, and this year many consider him the favorite to take it.
For those of you not familiar with his story, check his wiki page and read about why he was kicked out of the University of Colorado as a freshman, how he then transfered to community college, signed with Hawaii, and is now considered an elite NFL prospect who could have turned pro last year. It feels odd that I have to give background info on a guy who is #6 all time in career TD passes, but if there is an “east coast bias” against the west coast, then there is clearly a “continental U.S. bias” against our friends floating out in the middle of the Pacific. So do yourselves a favor and watch Colt Brennan and his Hawaii Warriors every chance you get. As an added bonus, you’ll also get to check out the coolest looking uniforms in football history.
Here are some of his career highlights thus far:
- NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes, achieved in 2006 (58)
- NCAA two-season record for most touchdown passes, (93 — achieved 2005-2006)
- NCAA record for passing efficiency (season), posting a 186.0 mark in 2006
- NCAA record for most passing yards (two seasons) with 9,850 (2005-2006)
- NCAA record for most points responsible for (season) with 384. (2006)
- Three-time 2006 WAC Offensive Player of the Week honoree
- Second Team Walter Camp Football Foundation All-American, 2006
- 2006 WAC Offensive Player of the Year
- Hawaii’s first quarterback to earn All-America status since 1978, 2006
