According to ESPN 1250 in Pittsburgh, in the locker room after the game Jeff Reed said that he saw Ed Reed (or another Raven) spit in Punter/Holder Mitch Berger’s face on the Steelers extra point after their game winning TD, so he pushed him. The push resulted in a 15 yard penalty.
Updated: Also heard that sources inside the locker room are saying the Steelers were prepared to GO FOR IT on 4th down if the game-winning Holmes catch was not called a TD.
They would have been stupid to go for it.
If you claim to be a physical football team, and can’t get 6 inches with a 6′ 5″ 250 lbs qb then you do not deserve to win. They should have went for it. If they’re men, then they would have gone for it.
Two words – Haloti Ngata. Complete beast. No waaaaaay you go for it in that circumstance. You have a better chance of the Steelers defense scoring in OT than converting the 4th and goal. Look at what Jeff Fisher pulled today.
First there’s a difference between 4 and 6 (Jeff Fisher situation) and 4 and inches on the goaline. Second I think you have a better chance getting a few inches than keeping the Ravens out of field goal range which they did quite a few times. I also have two words- triple team.

I don’t think they would have really gone for it. The defense wasn’t going to be beat by Flacco. And an OT tie, which given these two defense was a distict possibility, would have still all but clinched the division for the Steelers.But being as it’s a moot point, what the hell might as well say you would have gone for it. lol
The Ravens offense only scored one field goal. The others were the result of the special teams and defense. Flacco wasn’t going to beat the Steelers without an extremely short field in OT.
You act as though OT is a battle of QBs. I am pretty sure that all aspects of the game are in OT as well. But I agree that Flacco would not beat us but willis mcgahee, laron mcclain, and matt stover could have. I think that playing for a tie in OT is both weak and highly unlikely. If I remember right the last tie was about 7 years ago between the Falcons and Steelers. And its weak because champions play to win, not for ties.
Todd – Champions play to make the playoffs, then to win playoff games, then to win championship games. Getting stuffed at the goal line (which, frankly, is rather likely given Arians’ 3rd/4th-and-1 playcalling ability) jeopardizes our ability to make the playoffs.
Todd – have you SEEN the Steelers goal line/short yardage offense this year??
You are right – the Fisher situation is different. The division title and a playoff berth was not riding on that call.
It was clear that they were going to go for it when you watch that at least Trai Essex was standing next to Tomlin the whole time during the replay break, and I think i could also spot Russell and and McHugh.
Spitting ? I thought he was mad that a Ravens rolled onto his legs after the PAT, that should have been a flag (Dewayne Washington, Steelers-Titans, anyone ?)
By the way, dear Postgameheroes…is it possible to sort out the run from BigBen to the left side, during which Hines Ward tried to decapitate Bart Scott on a blindside hit ? Thank goodness Scott saw it and ducked, or else Ward would have been ripped into peaces afterwards… :)
@MaG: Yeah, I was certain that the flag was for “running into the kicker” on the PAT – it was clear on the broadcast that Reed got “hit” after the kick. I was dumbfounded when they called it on Reed. The difference with Nedney is that Jeff didn’t drop like he’d been shot by a sniper after the bump.
I thought it was ironic that to some degree the question of going for it on 4th and inches would have been forced by the “spike” on first down. I agreed with Simms that spiking the ball there didn’t make much sense. That throws away a down and stops the clock, which could help the Ravens. There was plenty of time – almost a minute left – and they still had a TO.
I agree, spiking like that is just poor clock management. But Reed needs to keep his composure, what good is pushing a man that is twice your size? Even if he allegedly pushed your holder. But in response to Steelhead and DJAnyReason, you’re right, I didn’t think about how brutal their goaline has been all game and season. Its sad how a team that prides themselves on smashmouth football can be so poor in short yardage situations.
Allegedly is the key word here. Not sure why this is even posted? Since Reed didn’t push Ed Reed he pushed #41 Frank Walker. Keep your composure. It was a stupid play that could have been costly.

They were definitely going for it on fourth down. I would have totally agreed with that call. Yes our goaline O has been horrid at best but we always have been just far enough away to not sneak it. Then we run off left tackle and get stopped. This play you just give it to ben let mchugh and russell run right into bens back and push him in the endzone…Gameover!
