Offensive Breakdown: Redskins vs Dolphins

9_9_campbellchart.JPG

11 out of 15 (when you exclude drops and throw aways) isn’t bad. Those 2 picks were costly, but on the second one, it looked like Lloyd may have given up on the route. Moss had a horrible day with 1 fall down and 2 drops.

Play Action Pass: 4/6 for 70 yards and 1 INT. That’s the Lloyd INT and Moss dropped the other incompletion. Overall, we used Play Action in a very deadly and efficient manner.

Offensive Line

[Table = 66]

I will have a more in depth look at the Jansen injury on Wednesday. Portis gave up the first sack and Jason held on to the ball way too long on the 2nd sack. Otherwise I felt we did great on blitz pickup and our pass blocking was solid all game long.

Run Blocking

[Table = 67]

Our success up the middle was aided by draws (3 draws up the middle for 17 yards) and an aging DT unit for Miami (V. Holliday is 32 and K. Traylor is 38) that could not keep up towards the end of the game. Runs left, as I said in my game preview, were productive as Samuels, Kendall and Rabach proved to be too much for an undersized Jason Taylor and any LBs filling in gaps on that side. Z. Thomas is old and small. He got handled more than a couple of times. Sadly, his career is winding down. All in all, a great day on the ground for our O-Line

Betts:

[Table = 68]

[Table = 70]

For some reason, the coaches don’t want him going right, so not much to go off of here.

Portis:

[Table = 69]

[Table = 71]

The increased ypc on the right hand side can be partly attributed to a worn down D-line, but I did see Heyer do a better job of getting a push at the line and flat out sealing guys out and creating big holes. Based on this game, Heyer is hands down a better run blocker than Jon Jansen.

Drive I

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 37 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Middle Portis 4
Thomas-Rabach zone block with Rabach hitting the 2nd level. Jansen gets a decent push, Thomas falls down, but Portis dodges his man anyways.
Skins 41 2nd and 6 I-Form 3WR Run Middle Portis 6
Sellers takes on BOTH blitzers. Kendall pushes his man 5 yards downfield. Portis mauls Dolphins Safety Yerimiah Bell. (Sellers +1, Kendall +1)
Skins 47 1st and 10 Ace 4-wide (3WR) Pass INT
Portis was open underneath, instead Campbell throws it to Cooley who was double covered (underneath LB, over top Safety.) Safety Renaldo Hill picks it off.
Drive: 3 plays for 10 yards. 2 runs (both middle) and 1 pass (INT.) Bad decision by Campbell.

Drive II

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 6 1st and 10 I-Form 2TE (1WR) Run Right Portis 4
Pucillo in as the 2nd TE. Stretch play, nice blocking. Safety Bell has to come up to make the stop.
Skins 10 2nd and 6 I-Form 2TE (1WR) Run Right Portis -3
Pucillo in as the extra TE yet again. Is Yoder that ineffective? Toss right and Porter makes a move on Cooley and gets the TFL (tackle for loss.) Can’t get too mad at Cooley there, I don’t think anyone expects him to be able to block Porter…except for the coaches. (Cooley -1)
Skins 7 3rd and 9 Ace 3WR Pass Moss (falls down) 0
Nice pocket, Moss just falls down.
Drive: 3 plays for 1 yard. 2 runs (both right) and 1 pass (WR fell.)

Drive III

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 20 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Left Betts 6
Stretch play. Rabach-Kendall zone block with Rabach going to the 2nd level and not doing much there, they both pancaked DT Holliday though. (Kendall +1/2, Rabach +1/2)
Skins 26 2nd and 4 I-Form 3WR Draw Middle Betts 1
Thomas misses his block. It’s possible he left the guy for Sellers (who didn’t pick him up) but judging by his “oh sh*t” turn-around reaction, I’m thinking he had a mental lapse there. (Thomas -1)
Skins 27 3rd and 3 Ace 3-Wide (2WR) Pass Randle El 35
Good protection, Campbell steps up and makes a perfect throw.
Miami 39 1st and 10 I-Form 3WR Run Left Betts 5
Rabach-Kendall Zone block, with Rabach getting to the 2nd level and picking up the LB. Good blocking overall.
Miami 34 2nd and 5 I-Form 3WR Run Middle Sellers 4
I love this play. Sellers just blasts his way up the middle.
Miami 30 3rd and 1 I-Form 2WR QB Sneak Campbell 1
Yep, he’s tall.
Miami 29 1st and 10 I-Form 2WR Run Left Betts 1
Hey, Thrash is in the game…the HD feed is back…my head stopped hurting. What will happen next!?
Miami 28 2nd and 9 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 4
Rabach is almost always leading the way on the running plays.
Miami 24 3rd and 5 Shotgun 3WR Shovel Pass Betts 16
Nice Call. Kendall pulls and leads the way (but doesn’t really block anyone.) Jansen and especially Thomas seal the inside and make this play work. (Thomas +1)
Miami 8 1st and Goal I-Form 1WR Run Left Betts 3
Pucillo is back in as the 2nd TE. Samuels-Pucillo zone block and Rabach-Kendall zone block. Samuels and Rabach hit the 2nd level. Thomas seals off the backside of the hole.
Miami 5 2nd and Goal I-Form 1WR Run Right Portis 0
Thomas-Jansen zone block gets busted up by DE Matt Roth.
Miami 5 3rd and Goal Ace 2WR (2TE buch) Pass Sack -9
Okay, Jason Taylor jumps the count here and that sets off a cascade of bad events. Portis, having seen Taylor get the early jump, focuses his block on him and doesn’t see Z. Thomas blitzing up the middle until it’s too late. Portis tries to recover to no avail and Z. Thomas gets Campbell and injures Jansen (Michigan.) Samuels gets tossed aside by Taylor as he was out of position by his quick start. Can’t blame Samuels…that was a great play by Taylor. Jansen is out for 7 weeks. (Portis -1)
Drive: 12 plays for 67 yards. 9 runs (4 left, 4 Middle, 1 right) for 25 yards and 2 passes for 51 yards and 1 sack (-9 yards.) Damn you Jason Taylor.

Drive IV

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 47 1st and 10 I-Form 2WR PA Pass Randle El 16
Wow, our first play action pass of the season…that took a while.
Miami 37 1st and 10 I-Form 3WR Run Middle Portis 2
Haha, Cooley is the FB/lead blocker here and it showed. (Cooley -1)
Miami 35 2nd and 8 Ace 1WR (2TE, 1FB) Pass Sack -6
Samuels tries to cut block and Jason holds on to the ball for a while…too long IMO. Heyer makes a better fit at RT. Heyer gets pushed back into the QB, but at least Jason can see this and adjust (although he didn’t.)
Miami 41 3rd and 14 Shotgun 3WR (2 RB) Pass Moss 0
Damn that was an UGLY throw by Campbell. Honestly what is up with Jason’s inability to throw a ball under 10 stories when he aims outside the hash marks.
Drive: 4 plays for 12 yards. 1 run (middle) for 2 yards, 2 passes for 16 yards and 1 sack for -6. Campbell’s short-intermediate accuracy sucks.

Drive V

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 24 1st and 10 Ace 3WR PA Pass 0
Campbell just throws it away as the screen was covered.
Skins 24 2nd and 10 Offset Ace, 3WR Draw Middle Portis 2
Campbell pump fakes then hands if off, Portis almost fumbled the handoff.
Skins 26 3rd and 8 Shotgun 3WR Pass Moss (drop) 0
Moss is off today.
Drive: 3 plays for 2 yards. 1 run (middle) for 2 yards and 2 passes for 0 yards. Not much else to say.

HALFTIME

Drive VI

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 22 1st and 10 Ace 4-Wide (2WR) Run Right Portis 7
Heyer-Thomas zone block with Thomas hitting the 2nd level. Nice hole by those two. (Thomas and Heyer +1)
Skins 29 2nd and 3 Ace 2WR (1FB, 1TE) Pass Moss 8
Quick hitter on the slant to moss.
Skins 37 1st and 10 I-Form 3WR PA Pass Moss (Drop) 0
Wow, just chalk it up to a bad day.
Skins 37 2nd and 10 Pro Set 3WR Penalty —- -10
Holding on Sellers.
Skins 27 2nd and 20 Ace 3 wide (2WR) PA Pass Randle El 49
There you go…play action is working nice today.
Miami 24 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Right Portis 6
R. Thomas Pancakes Z. Thomas and Heyer seals his guy to the outside, nice blocking by Rabach as well. (Thomas +1, Heyer +1)
Miami 18 2nd and 4 Ace 3WR Run Left Portis 18 (TD)
Cooley blocks! Crap did he block…he sealed out J. Taylor, Samuels gets the block at the 2nd level on LB Channing Crowder and Randle El gets the last HUGE block to spring Portis free, and Portis’ speed takes care of the rest. (Cooley +1, Samuels +1, Randle El +1)
Drive: 6 plays for 88 yards and 1 penalty for -10 yards. 3 runs (2 right, 1 left) for 31 yards. 3 passes for 57 yards. That was a fun drive to chart. I gotta say, so far it looks like Heyer is going to be ok at RT.

Drive VII

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 20 1st and 10 Ace 3 WR Penalty -10
Holding on Rabach.
Skins 10 1st and 20 I-Form 2 Wide (1WR, 2TE) Run Left Betts -1
I hate that toss play.  Sellers, Rabach and Samuels lead.  Sellers misses 2 blocks and is the reason the play here doesn’t work.  (Sellers -1)
Skins 9 2nd and 21 Ace 3WR Scramble Campbell 4
Good protection but nobody open downfield.
Skins 13 3rd and 17 Shotgun 3WR (2HB) Pass Throw Away 0
Lots of time but again, nobody open.
Drive:  3 plays for 3 yards and 1 penalty for -10 yards.  1 run for -1 yard, 1 scramble for 4 yards and 1 pass for 0 yards.  I love that Merriman/Steven Jackson Nike commercial with the Last of the Mohicans music playing, I’d watch that before a game (of playstation) to pump me up.  Classic soundtrack btw.

Drive VIII

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 20 1st and 10 I don’t know Penalty -5
False Start on Heyer.  That was some kind of Triangular backfield formation.  Leave a note in the comments section if you know.
Skins 15 1st and 15 I-Form 3WR PA Pass Sellers 3
What the hell is Kendall doing blocking Jason Campbell.
Skins 18 2nd and 12 Ace 3WR Pass Moss 5
Quick slant to Moss.  Just get the ball in his hands.
Skins 23 3rd and 7 Ace 3WR Scramble Campbell 12
Taylor does a delay stunt and Portis doesn’t stay back for blitz pick up and instead goes out for a pass.  Damn Campbell outran Taylor, awesome.  (Portis -1)  But at least Portis tries to make up for it by going helmet to helmet on DE Roth.  Gotta love that U mentality.
Skins 35 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 7
Betts knocks Z. Thomas back about 3 or 4 yards.  Great run.
Skins 42 2nd and 3 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 3
Gets the First.
Skins 45 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts -1
LB Crowder finally caught on to our versatile play calling over those last 3 plays.
Skins 44 2nd and 11 I-Form 2 Wide (1WR) Pass Moss 16
Moss is the only WR on his side and still finds the hole in the zone to get open.  That’s on some Steve Smith level stuff.
Miami 40 1st and 10 Ace 3WR PA Pass INT 0
Ouch.  It looks like Lloyd stopped on his Go route.  Great effort on the block by Portis (+1)
Drive:  8 plays for 45 yards and 1 penalty for -5.  3 runs (3 middle) for 9 yards, 4 passes for 24 yards, and 1 scramble for 12 yards.

Drive IX

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 35 1st and 10 I-Form 3WR Run Right Portis 4
Portis’ does a sick spin move to dodge the guy Sellers missed.  (Sellers -1)
Skins 39 2nd and 6 Ace 3WR Run Middle Portis 3
Yep.
Skins 42 3rd and 3 Ace 4 Wide (2WR 2TE) Pass Randle El 9
Nice job by Campbell to evade the DB blitz.
Miami 49 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Penalty 5
12 men on the field.
Miami 44 1st and 5 I-Form 3WR Run Middle Sellers 4
Sellers trucks Z. Thomas and drags him for about 5 yards.
Miami 40 2nd and 1 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 11
Rabach cleared the way (Rabach +1)
Miami 29 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 3
Rabach-Thomas zone block with Rabach getting at the 2nd level and destroying Z. Thomas
Miami 26 2nd and 7 I-Form 2WR Reverse Left Randle El -3
Z. Thomas hurdles over R. Thomas’ “block” (Thomas -1)  Would’ve been a good play if Thomas got the block, I see why people hate this call but teams with speedsters like Reggie Bush and Teddy Ginn (today) call it too and make it work.  Here it’s kinda Thomas’ fault not Al Saunders.
Miami 29 3rd and 10 Ace 4 Wide (3WR) Draw Middle Portis 8
Everyone picks up their blocks and Portis makes safety Renaldo Hill miss.
Miami 21 4th and 2 I-Form 1 WR Penalty -5
Illegal Motion.  We did this in pre-season and it worked.  Why not now?  I’m sure Rich Eisen will be asking the VP of officiating about this on Total Access.  Haha…Gibbs is IRATE.
Drive:  8 plays for 39 yards and 2 penalty for 0 yards.  7 runs (5 middle and 1 right and 1 left) for 30 yards and 1 pass for 9 yards.

Drive X

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 29 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Draw Middle Betts 7
Pump fake-draw.  Great play design.
Skins 36 2nd and 3 Ace 3WR Run Right Betts -2
Cooley gets owned by Porter again.  (Cooley -1)
Skins 34 3rd and 5 Ace 3WR Pass Randle El 0
Another inaccurate out route by Campbell.
Drive:  3 plays for 5 yards.  2 runs for 5 yards and 1 “pass.”  I’m skipping the “Hail Mary” drive as it only alters stats and had no impact on the game.  But oh was it so close.

Drive XI (Overtime)

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Player Yards
Skins 20 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Right Portis 6
Great seal by Heyer and Cooley.  Crowder had a hard time finding the ball carrier behind those two.  (Heyer and Cooley +1)
Skins 26 2nd and 4 Ace 3WR Run Left Portis 14
Horrible pursuit angles by Jason Taylor and Crowder…especially Taylor, that was ugly contain.
Skins 40 1st and 10 Ace 3WR Run Middle Betts 0
DB blitz stops the run.
Skins 40 2nd and 10 I-Form 2WR PA Pass Sellers 2
Great protection. (O-line +1)
Skins 42 3rd and 8 Offset Ace 3 Wide (2WR) Pass Cooley 11
Great blitz recognition by Cooley and Campbell.  Wow, that was Cooley’s first catch.
Miami 47 1st and 10 Ace 4 Wide (3WR) Run Left Betts 10
Oh man if only Samuels didn’t get in the way.  Good block by Cooley on the DB.  This D-line is tired.
Miami 37 1st and 10 Ace 4 Wide (3WR) Run Right Betts 1
Dolphins brought everyone to stop the run on that play…play action would have been a TD for sure.
Miami 36 2nd and 9 I-Form 1WR Run Left Portis 4
Wait for it…
Miami 32 3rd and 4 Ace 3WR Run Middle Portis 11
…Cooley and Heyer +1.  Nuff said.
Drive:  9 plays for 59 yards.  7 runs (3 left, 2 middle, 2 right) for 46 yards and 2 passes for 13 yards.  I would’ve liked to have gotten a couple more yards on the ground.  40 yards is a long FG and that D-line was gassed, we could have QB sneaked it for 10 yards.  But whatever, Gibbs is God, end of story.

Wide Recievers

[Table = 73]

Atrocious day by Moss, but Randle El may have finally established himself as our #2. Moss did get open on a route where he was the only WR who went out (in the middle of 3 guys playing zone), so that is reassuring. Lloyd continues to suck, just put Thrash in there at the 3 already.

edit:  Lloyd was targeted on the PA Pass that got picked off.  (HT:  Jon)
