Steelers get screwed with compensatory pick

By Dagger | March 23, 2009

wtf

Many Steeler fans, myself included, figured the Steelers would get themselves a 3rd Round pick for losing Faneca and Haggans to free agency.  Faneca started every game for the Jets and made the Pro Bowl.  The Steelers brought in Mewelde Moore and he started only a few games.

Somehow the Steelers ended up with not a 3rd….not even a 4th as some negative nancy’s were predicting…..they got a 5th Round Pick.  Awful.

Not sure how you lose a starting Pro Bowl guard and a starting OLB and bring in a 3rd down scat back but only get a 5.

The full list of compensatory picks is below.  New England had a real nice day.  They got themselves a 3rd (for losing Asante Samuel) a 5th for Randal Gay and a 6th for Dante Stallworth.

If the Steelers entered the Free Agency period and passed on matching the offers Galloway, Carr, etc…got because they thought they would have 4 picks in the first 3 or 4 rounds to fill out their depth chart; they’re probably not real happy right now.  Ignoring the issues at OL, WR, DB, DL, etc….seemed odd but when you have that extra 3rd Rounder it’s not as big of a deal.

Here’s hoping that they “hit” on their first 4 picks and Sweed steps his game up.

3 (33-97) New England

3 (34-98) Cincinnati

3 (35-99) Chicago

3 (36-100) NY Giants

WTF? Took the words right out of my mouth. I think its time the NFL exposed their secret little method of giving out comp picks.

What a f-ing joke! Goodell is a real piece of $hit.

Funny how they screw the team that runs a first class organization and reward the team that was caught cheating

emember guys, the equation is supposed to be based on contract numbers and performance, i think adamjt13 over at pft has the skinny on this.

Moore rushed for like 600 yards and Hartwig gave up more sacks than any other center in football. What great performances.

Fox was a great ST guy yippie.

I can see why they docked us since we picke up all these superstars.

Hatwig wasn’t even considered in the equation as he was released by the Panthers prior to free agency beginning.

The Steelers got shafted no doubt. I don’t know if there’s any avenue of appeal but before Dan Rooney hightails it to Ireland he should demand an accounting by the NFL as to how this decision was reached. I honestly don’t see why it couldn’t be ammended to at least a 4th round pick if Mr. Rooney expresses genuine outrage. Which in this case would be entirely justifiable.

There’s simply no precedence as to why the Steelers only got a 5th rounder for Faneca. It’s not because they won the Superbowl, it’s not because they didn’t suffer a net loss (they did, only Faneca, Moore and Haggans counted for this calculation) and it’s not because Faneca’s contract wasn’t expensive enough (only Samuel received a bigger one last offseason). This leads to the conclusion that the NFL just felt like shafting the Steelers.

Teams that lose a free agent with 10 or more seasons of NFL experience can get no better than a fifth-round compensatory pick for that player.

Mohawk – I saw that today too…good thing they tell the teams this up front.
