Steelers Draft: David Johnson (round 7)

David Johnson

Strengths:
Good bulk with a solid frame and long arms…Is very athletic…Decent speed…Has big, soft hands…Nice ball skills and body control…Can get down the seam and stretch the field…Above average blocker both on the move and in-line…Is  extremely  versatile…Durable…Experienced.

Weaknesses:
‘Tweener who might have to make a position change…Doesn’t have the ideal height that you look for…Not very elusive…Blocking technique and route running are pretty raw…Falls off blocks…Lacks a killer instinct…Didn’t face a lot of top competition…Wasn’t very productive.

Notes:
Could project to Tight End, H-Back or Fullback at the next level…Was a three-year starter for the Red Wolves…Named 2nd Team All-Sun Belt Conference as a senior…Small school sleeper with a well-rounded game and some intriguing physical tools…Nice developmental project.

Our Take: DJ Johnson has been labeled a “perfect H-back”.  We know that Bruce Arians likes 3 TEs and that he likes to move his TEs around from TE, FB, put them in motion, etc….7th rounders always have a huge uphill battle in their attempts to make the roster but if he can play then maybe he can take over for McHugh or Carey Davis…but I doubt it.
