For the 4th week in a row: Sean Taylor + LaRon Landry = You can’t spread us out in the Red Zone. But keep trying, people.

great detailed review as usual Dillweed, tyvm for the time you spend on putting this all together. BTW, Leigh Torrance is the guy who showed enough chops in the preseason to make Ade Jimoh expendable and beat out Jeremetrius Butler who tried to make it after leaving the Rams. So the kid has potential and with Smootie out, Williams tossed his fanny out there (was it because Springs got nicked again or simply to blood him in game time, who knows?). Was good to see Wilson and Evans get some reps, and even some production. I really like the transformation of this D.

  • Agreed–thanks for these reviews. I make a point of coming here every week. As to Leigh Torrence, he was in because like Randel-El, Springs was out with “cramps.” We clearly need to keep more Midol on the sidelines.

I’ll be fascinated to see how Fabini and Wade do this weekend against the best pass rushing d-line they’ve faced.

  • Neil

Much appreciated, and thanks for reading.

Been around since pre-season? Well, thats what I get for not watching the 2nd half of those games.

  • MBP

You’re like Kornheiser…have to be in bed by 9pm

  • EpsteinsMothersDoctor

Good stuff as always…thanks again Dillweed.

Maybe I’m being selfish, but if you ever have to choose between doing these breakdowns and whatever your day job is, I’d prefer that you choose the breakdowns.

  • Jon

Got to second Epstein- great work.

  • Dagger

When we submit his resume and “writing samples” to Ashburn,VA and Redskin HQ can we use you guys as a reference??

    haha

    Dillweed = must-read web coverage.

  • piratedan

would love to see his stuff linked to over on my favorite board for Redskins discussions, Capitol Punishment over on the scout.com boards, but hey, that’s above my web pay grade level ;-)

    From the WashPost:

“When you’re as good as we’ve been on third down the last two weeks, that’s sometimes as symbolic as takeaways,” said Gregg Williams, assistant head coach-defense.
    —————————————————–
We’re the only team in the NFL with both units in the top 4 for third down efficiency. Making us the most efficient third down team in the league.

    Offense #4
    Defense #1

Defensive Breakdown: Redskins vs Eagles

qbhit.jpg
This…. is… SPARTA!!!

Front 7 (or 8)

Run Defense

[Table = 81]

2nd week in a row that the opposing team only ran once to the right. Now I know Runyan (Michigan) is an excellent run blocking RT and Phillip Daniels was out with an injury…so I don’t know what to make of this. Perhaps Landry has scared teams away from that side, I don’t know. Pro Bowl caliber RG Shawn Andrews definitely owned us with his run blocking up the middle, hats off to him. Bastard.

Stunts: Carter: 1 and Griffin: 1. Griffin got pressure, while Carter looked like an idiot. Seriously, and this is off topic, but what the hell is he doing out there with all that spinning? You are not Dwight Freeney, stop it…it’s embarrassing.

Deflections: None.

Pressures: Marcus, Griffin, Rocky, Evans, Montgomery, Landry, C. Wilson, Taylor, and Fletch all had 1 pressure each. Awesome.

Sacks: Marcus and Rocky: 1 each. Landry and Griffin: 1/2 each.

landry.jpg

Landry

Last week against the Dolphins, we stuck LaRon in the box 12 times out 59 total plays (20%.) This week we stuck him in the box 14 times out of 64 total plays (22%.) No big difference there, but it’s when we stuck him in the box that brings about a difference. Last week: 7 times on 1st down, 4 times on 2nd down and just 1 time on 3rd down. This week: 2 times on 1st down, 5 times on 2nd down, 5 times on 3rd down and on both 4th downs. Week 1 he was used in the box as a run stuffer, this time we used him in the box as a pass rusher.

You gotta stop Ronnie Brown? No problem. You need pressure on McNabb? We got the guy for the job. And he’s just a freakin’ rookie. Speaking of versatile players…

marcus.jpg

Marcus

He played DE 14 out of 64 plays and we lined him up there on 7 out of 16 3rd downs (44% of all 3rd down situations.) Now obviously, his high amount of total reps at DE was brought on upon by Daniels injury…but the high percentage of 3rd downs he played is alarming evidence of our lack of depth at the DE position. What happens if Marcus gets hurt? Apparently, our coaching staff has minimal faith in Chris Wilson or Demetric Evans to rush the passer when it matters most (i.e. on 3rd downs.) And I can tell you that from what I saw these past 2 weeks and from pre-season, Marcus Washington is a better pass rusher than Andre Carter. Daniels is a great all-around DE, but pray Marcus stays healthy because, while we may have an adequate back ups at OLB, we apparently don’t have anyone to fill in at DE on passing downs.

Blitzes, Formations, Secondary breakdowns and Play by Play chart after the jump.

[Table = 80]

Last week, Greg Williams sent only Rocky and LaRon on blitzes and this week, on 3rd downs, again he only trusted Rocky and LaRon to blitz (except for that one 3rd down-all-out-blitz towards the end of the game), which to me is a statement from Greg Williams about who he thinks 2 of his top blitzers are (if Sean Taylor wasn’t so valuable in coverage, I’m sure he’d be getting sent after the QB, too). Overall success of obtaining a pressure or sack off of a blitz last week: 33%. This week: 39%. It’s important to understand I can only document pressures that I see, i.e. QB getting flushed out of the pocket, hand on the ball/QB, rushed throwing motion and/or rushed motion leading to errant throw. However, judging by all the 0 yard gains in the result column, there were definitely some mental pressures on McNabb that are unaccounted for.

Secondary

targeted.JPG

Pass Interference: None

Plays Over 20 yds: Run up the middle by Westbrook (27 yds)

Plays 15-20 yds: Fletch in coverage (18 yds), Draw up the middle (15 yds), Macklin (17 yds), and Rogers (19 yds)

Rocky’s 15 targets were mainly while he was in zone coverage. He did play in the slot a few times, but usually with underneath zone assignments. McNabb targeting Rocky’s underneath coverage that many times combined with the stat that 0 throws went over 20 yards speaks volumes of what Sean Taylor aka The Reaper is doing back there in center field coverage. Credit also goes to Carlos Rogers, who took over for Smoot as the new whipping boy for the opposing QB. Carlos did (surprisingly) well and had a huge improvement from his performance last week against Chambers. 7 times throws his way went for 0 yards…partly due to an off night from Donovan McNabb, but also because Rogers was able to stay stride for stride with K. Curtis for most of the night. The 19 yarder Rogers gave up was due to a 7 man blitz that got no pressure at all on McNabb. That could have been much worse.

An interesting call from the coaching staff: on a 3rd and 3 we sent Landry on a blitz while keeping Fletch in one-on-one coverage with B. Westbrook. The result was an 18 yard gain by Westbrook. This could have been due to some confusion from the no-huddle Philly ran, but still no excuse for that backwards assignment call. Also, on one play, Demetric Evans was in one on one coverage with Kevin Curtis…why? And finally, Macklin gave up the highest yards per target average with 10.75 yards per target (4 targets for 43 yards.)

BTW, who the hell is Leigh Torrence?

Drive I

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 6 1st and 10 4-3 (Under) Run Right 0
Landry in the box. Fletcher and Landry fight through blocks and make the play.
Eagles 6 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Prioleau 7
We send a 3 man rush and drop Montgomery in coverage…just like how he was used at Minnesota.
Eagles 13 3rd and 3 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Fletch 18
Landry in the box. Marcus at DE. Eagles no huddle in an attempt to keep our Nickel coverage on the field…*sigh* Have they learned nothing about our versatility? Landry steps in at LB and Fletch plays slot CB…wait, what the?…Landry blitzes and McNabb throws it to Westbrook (guy Fletch was covering) and they get 18 yards. Um, why didn’t we just blitz Fletch and keep Landry in coverage? (Blitz – Landry)
Eagles 31 1st and 10 4-3 (Under) Pass Rogers 0
Landry in the box. We blitz everybody, with Fletch and Rocky coming in on the delay. Rogers holds his own against Curtis in man coverage. Good job Carlos. (Blitz – Marcus, Landry, Fletch, Rocky)
Eagles 31 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Penalty -7
Holding Eagles.
Eagles 24 2nd and 17 4-3 Pass Rocky/Marcus 6
Rocky in the slot. Good closing speed.
Eagles 30 3rd and 11 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers 7
We rush 3 and drop D. Evans (playing DT here) in coverage. Rogers stops Curtis from getting a first down.
Drive: 6 plays for 38 yards and 1 penalty for -7. 5 passes for 38 yards and 1 run (right) for 0 yards. Westbrook looks like he’ll be giving us problems all day.

Drive II

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 28 1st and 10 4-3 Pass Fletch/Rocky 0
Rocky again with slot duties. Incomplete pass.
Eagles 28 2nd and 10 4-3 Run Left 5
Damn, our LBs are playing deep. They are about 6 yards off the line of scrimmage.
Eagles 33 3rd and 5 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Sack -3
If Marcus was supposed to stay and contain McNabb, he sure abandoned those duties. (Sack – Marcus)
Drive: 3 plays for 2 yards (ouch.) 1 pass, 1 sack and 1 run left for 5 yards. This is the Redskins D I’m accustomed to seeing. People complain we don’t get enough turnovers, but I think these 3 and outs count as ½ of a turnover.

Drive III

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 31 1st and 10 4-3 Pass Marcus 6
Marcus had slot duties here.
Eagles 37 2nd and 4 4-3 (Under) Pass Rogers/Taylor 0
Landry in the box. Rocky and Fletch on the delay blitz. (Blitz – Marcus, Fletch and Rocky)
Eagles 37 3rd and 4 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky 8
Landry in the box. Marcus at DE. Carter stunts inside, hey our first pressure of the game by Marcus! Avant (Michigan) makes a great catch. (Pressure – Marcus)
Eagles 45 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Run Middle (Draw) 15
Looks like we even blitzed Rocky up the middle, oh well.
Skins 40 1st and 10 4-3 (Under) Run Middle 27
Horrible tackling.
Skins 13 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Run Middle 3
Have the Eagles found a weakness in our D?
Skins 10 2nd and 7 4-3 (Stack) Pass Rogers 3
Rogers is this week’s F. Smoot.
Skins 7 3rd and 4 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers 0
Landry in the box, Marcus at DE. (Blitz- Landry)
Drive: 8 plays for 62 yards. 5 passes for 17 yards and 3 runs (middle) for 45 yards. Thankfully, Reid is obsessed with passing the ball and didn’t exploit whatever problems we had up the middle any further. Greg Williams said in a postgame interview that there was a point during the game where he decided they were just going to take away Westbrook and let the other guys beat them. I’m assuming that took place right after this drive. Weird that we’re challenging McNabb to beat us…I feel old.

Drive IV

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Skins 39 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass Rocky 6
Carter got some decent heat.
Skins 33 2nd and 4 4-2-5 Nickel Run left 1
Yep, Greg’s had enough of Westbrook.
Skins 32 3rd and 3 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Springs 8
Marcus at DE. Landry on a delay blitz. (Blitz – Landry)
Skins 24 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass Marcus/Springs 0
Man, Eagles love play action.
Skins 24 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky 2
Rocky closed in a hurry.
Skins 22 3rd and 8 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky 0
Marcus at DE. We blitz and get absolutely no pressure. (Blitz – Landry)
Drive: 6 plays for 17 yards. 5 passes for 16 yards and 1 run (left) for 1 yard. Rocky is the MVP of this drive.

Drive V

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 20 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Scramble 4
Great contain/closing speed by Marcus and Rocky.
Eagles 24 2nd and 6 4-2-5 Nickel Run Left 12
Marcus at DE. They run away from the blitz.
Eagles 36 1st and 10 4-3 (Over) Run Middle 4
Westbrook is scary between the tackles. Good tackle by Golston.
Eagles 40 2nd and 6 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers/Rocky 0
Marcus at DE. Marcus drops back into coverage. Once again we blitz and get no pressure. (Blitz – Landry, Fletch)
Eagles 40 3rd and 6 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers 0
Landry in the box. Marcus at DE. Rogers is kicking ass out there today. Great one-on-one coverage. Pressure caused the throw to go out of bounds. (Blitz – Rocky, Pressure – Rocky)
Drive: 5 plays for 20 yards. 2 passes for 0 yards and 2 runs (1 left, 1 middle) for 16 yards and 1 scramble for 4 yards. HALFTIME.

Drive VI

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 33 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Run left 5
Yep.
Eagles 38 2nd and 5 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers 0
D. Evans at DE and drops into coverage. (Blitz – Prioleau, Fletch)
Eagles 38 3rd and 5 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Springs 0
Andre Carter almost got there, as did Landry. (Blitz – Landry, Pressure – Landry)
Drive: 3 plays for 5 yards. 2 passes for 0 yards and 1 run left for 5 yards. Good efficient use of the blitz.

Drive VII

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Skins 13 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Run Middle 2
Great job by Marcus to shoot and fill the gap.
Skins 15 2nd and 8 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Springs/Rocky 4
Called fumble, be then review overturned the call.
Skins 19 3rd and 4 4-2-5 Nickel Sack -4
Marcus at DE. (Blitz – Rocky, Sack – Rocky)
Drive: 3 plays for 2 yards (ha!) 1 pass for 4 yards, 1 sack for -4 yards and 1 run (middle) for 2 yards. Our blitzes are much more effective this half. Again, I constitute this 3 and out deep in their territory as a ½ turnover.

Drive VIII

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 36 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass Springs/Landry 0
High pass. No pressure from our front 4 either. Weird.
Eagles 36 2nd and 10 4-3 (Under) Scramble 11
Landry in the Box. MONTGOMERY occupies two blockers which frees up Griffin for an inside stunt. Delayed blitz by Landry and Fletch. McNabb gets free for the first…damn. (Blitz – Marcus, Landry, Fletch) (Pressure – Griffin)
Eagles 47 1st and 10 4-3 Run Left 11
Everyone hit their assignments, just some poor tackling.
Skins 42 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass Rocky/Marcus/Landry 13
Man, not even a hint of pressure from our front 4. I don’t think they even pushed the line back.
Skins 29 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Run Middle 5
Okay this needs to stop.
Skins 24 2nd and 5 4-3 (Under) Pass Screen 10
Landry in the box. (Blitz – Marcus, Landry)
Skins 14 1st and 10 4-3 Pass Rocky 0
McNabb just throws it into the ground. Marcus took away the primary read underneath.
Skins 14 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Run Left 1
Marcus at DE.
Skins 13 3rd and 9 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky 5
Macklin has been in the game for a couple of plays and hasn’t been targeted yet…interesting.
Drive: 9 plays for 56 yards. 6 passes for 39 yards and 3 runs (2 left, 1 middle) for 17 yards. More double digit gains than I would like to see.

Drive IX

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 35 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky/Fletch 11
Montgomery almost got a pressure.
Eagles 46 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass D. Evans 11
I shit you not…D. Evans was covering Kevin Curtis man to man…and he actually made the tackle. (Blitz – Fletch, Landry)
Skins 43 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers/Taylor 0
Rogers has really stepped it up from last week.
Skins 43 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Sack -8
Landry in the box. Marcus at DE. Who the hell is Leigh Torrence? How and when did we acquire him? (Blitz – Landry, Fletch) (Sack – Griffin, Landry)
Eagles 49 3rd and 18 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky 14
That’s the first I’ve heard from Westbrook in a while.
Skins 37 4th and 4 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers 14
Landry at the line/box. Rogers tried for the INT.
Skins 23 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Macklin 7
Marcus at DE. He almost got a pressure .
Skins 16 2nd and 3 4-2-5 Nickel Run Middle 1
Landry at the line/box. Marcus at DE. Fletch got owned, but it didn’t matter as we sent Rocky and Landry, too.
Skins 15 3rd and 2 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Swing Pass 4
Damn it.
Skins 11 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass Torrence 1
Why are we running a 4-3 front against a Shotgun 4 Wide? Hey, it’s that Torrence guy again.
Skins 10 2nd and 9 4-3 (Stack) Pass Rocky 0
Horrible throw. Jaws tries to defend McNabb by saying it was a throw-away. Uh, no there was an open guy underneath and he missed him badly. Jaws is really pulling out all the stops tonight to try and defend this team. He rules on NFL Matchup, so I’ll allow for this.
Skins 10 3rd and 9 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Macklin 7
Haha, Eagles suck.
Drive: 12 plays for 62 yards. 10 passes for 69 yards, 1 sack for -8 and 1 run (middle) for 1 yard. Bend, but don’t break.

Drive X

Yard Line Down Formation Play Call Coverage Yards
Eagles 20 1st and 10 4-3 (Stack) Pass None 9
D. Evans and Montgomery apply pressure, McNabb flips it out to his RB (Pressure – Evans, Montgomery)
Eagles 29 2nd and 1 4-3 (Stack) Run Middle 5
We’ll give them that all day.
Eagles 34 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Mackin 17
DE C. Wilson got a hand on McNabb and forced him out of the pocket (Pressure – Wilson)
Skins 49 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rocky/Torrence 8
Just taking what our D is giving him…but I think we’re giving a bit too much now.
Skins 41 2nd and 2 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Landry 0
We only send 3 after McNabb, Landry almost came up with a diving INT.
Skins 41 3rd and 2 Dime (!) Run Middle -3
I guess the Eagles couldn’t believe we finally sent in a Dime package and tried to take advantage?
Skins 44 4th and 5 8 at the line Pass Rogers 19
Landry in the box/line and backs off. Too easy for McNabb. He just picks on the cushion that Carlos gives…and I can’t blame Carlos here, when you send 7 guys at someone, you have to get a hand in the face of the QB at the very LEAST. Nobody got pressure. (Blitz – Rocky, Fletch, Taylor)
Skins 25 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Taylor/Macklin 12
Wilson looks good out there at DE.
Skins 13 1st and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass QB Hit 0
The Reaper, bitches. (Blitz – Taylor, Fletch) (Pressure -Taylor)
Skins 13 2nd and 10 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Rogers/Prioleau 4
Great open field tackle by Rogers.
Skins 9 3rd and 6 8 at the line Pass Torrence 0
Landry in the box/line. Damn we send 7 again and Fletch got in the face of McNabb to cause the off target throw. (Blitz – Rocky, Fletch, Landry) (Pressure – Fletch)
Skins 9 4th and 6 4-2-5 Nickel Pass Landry 0
Marcus at DE. No blitz. LANDRY! Beast, great kill shot to jar the ball loose. “Saves the game for the Redskins” – Tirico. Yep
Drive: 12 plays for 71 yards. 10 passes for 69 yards and 2 runs (both middle) for 2 yards. Teams continually try to spread us out in the Red Zone and it hardly ever works, I’ve been preaching this since pre-season. Man Landry was a HUGE pick up…he and Taylor have shut passing games down in the red zone, and with Taylor playing centerfield and Landry in the box, teams cannot go deep down the middle of the field or run on us. Giants are next….we are looking at a possible 3-0 record heading into the Bye week.
