Larry Johnson to the Steelers?

By Dagger | November 9, 2009

LJ

According to a number of NFL insiders, Larry Johnson could end up in Pittsburgh. I’m not sure he is really needed but I wouldn’t have a problem bringing LJ on board for the rest of the year.  Willie Parker won’t be here next year and he’s not 100% healthy right now.  Mendenhall has had fumbling problems and Mewelde is the 3rd down guy…..so there actually is room for Johnson if the Steelers wanted him.  He has to go through waivers just like Chris Chambers did last week so this whole conversation might be for nothing.  My money is on the Redskins.  Portis will miss at least a week with a concussion and the Skins never have issues bringing in guys with shady character issues.  It’s not like he’s going to come into D.C. and “mess up a good thing”.

Mendenhall kinda looked like a young LJ tonight.

I don't want that shitbag anywhere near the Steelers. I couldn't care less about his Penn State ties. The dude is done in the NFL. Bettis put up a piece on SI today about it and I agree with him. Nobody is going to sign this guy.

I would have a BIG problem bringing Johnson onto a championship caliber team. Sorry to disagree very strongly. LJ is a headcase but he is also washed up. After Mendy's terrific night this eventing, I hope that's the last we hear of this potential folly.

Somebody will sign him but I don't think there's the slightest chance that it's the Steelers

I wouldn't be surprised if the Skins brought him in but I don't see it happening. Then again, I said the same thing about DeAngelo Hall last year, so what do I know?

There is no way in hell the Steelers FO decides he is worthy of the Black and Gold.

The POS pouts, doesn't pass protect, spits on women, and is just in general a "me-first" asshole. I would rather sign Michael Vick and Pacman Jones to 10 year deals than LJ for half a season.

My take is similar to Dagger's.

I think if he clears waivers, the Steelers will interview him. And in this interview, if they see any sign of hope in LJ, they will sign him. Then once LJ is ready to go, IR Willie. The Steelers' FO, Coaching Staff and Players are all tight enough and all have various control of the team, that even a "plague" like LJ would either fall in line, or get kicked to the curb. IF this guy gets signed, he wont disrupt the team, there is no way. Plexiglass didn't disrupt the team with his shennigans, neither did Anthony Smith. Larry Foote and Clark Haggans were upset WHILE STILL WITH THE TEAM. and even bitched about playing time or the young LBs coming up to fast. Once any one of these players no longer becomes helpful to the team, they get the boot ASAP. They dont get disrespected, they just are allowed to leave. I dont see why LJ would be any different. Seriously, could you imagine James Harrison putting up with any type of bitching, what about Farrior or Ward? All those guys regulate the locker room so Tomlin doesn't have to. And none of them want Tomlin regulating the locker room. If LJ comes on board, I hope its like a Leftwhich situation. Where he will be given a chance to show other teams what he has left in the tank.

is this coming from the same bozo's that predicted that the big snack was getting cut before game 1 this year?

no, the Hampton thing came from La Canfora. This is coming from Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter among others.

I just don't see any purpose in signing him with the emergence of Mendenhall. If they're going to distribute carries then i'd prefer giving them to guys like Mewelde Moore, who i'd rate above LJ in just about every aspect anyway. At this point LJ is like a 1985 Ford Ranger with 300,000+ miles on it. He's absolutely of no use to the Steelers.

I agree that the stronger personalities and culture of the Steelers locker room would keep him in line, but I still just don't want that guy anywhere near the team for the simple fact that he'd be a disgrace to the uniform, the city, and organization (not that we haven't had plenty of those anyway).

If Willie, goes on IR, and then LJ screws up, then the Steelers are -1 RB. At this point, there is no reason to screw up team chemistry. LJ and FWP are about equal in ability right now, but Parker does not have the attitude. FWP is a team player, and LJ is not.
