Ziggy Hood getting more playing time
By Dagger | November 13, 2009
Ziggy saw 43% of the defensive snaps last week, indicating that he is earning the trust of the Steeler coaching staff. Two weeks ago he was on the field for 10 plays. The game before that, he saw 6 snaps.
Dick LeBeau and the Steeler coaching staff gave credit to Ziggy for forcing the ball out of Kyle Orton’s hand on Tyrone Carter’s Pick 6. Check out the screen shots below:
Ziggy beats double-coverage and pressures Orton into getting rid of the ball quicker than he wanted to.

Does it have to do with getting the trust of LeBeau or the fact that two guys in front of him on the depth chart are injured?

did he make any tackles?
i saw him out there and he seemed to just be "floating" around not doing much

I am encouraged but he needs to make a play and get a sack.

3-4 Ends rarely get sacks. I think he's doing perfectly fine. Yes, he was forced into playing b/c of injury and would have probably only got spot duty if Smith was around. But Steelers rarely play their rooks.

3-4 ends never get sacks?Tell that to Bruce smith.

I think the exact word was "rarely". Bruce Smith is an exception to the rule. How many 3-4 DEs rushed the passer like Smith? None – that's why he's a hall of famer.

this play bothered me a little bit. steelers were quite frankly lucky on this play. moreno comes out and basically gets picked by the official there. otherwise, he probably makes that catch, or it's an incomplete at worst.
also, dagger claims ziggy beat a double team, but really, the RG was initially going to engage hoke. in the second picture, you see the RG is leaving hoke and turning to ziggy, but he's already behind, and ziggy really just beat the RT on the play.
in the 3rd pic, the RG is pulling a mahan and essentially lying down.
ziggy is playing better, but giving him credit on beating this double team is a little excessive, like the great credit to the steelers D for this pick-6. it's a great DEF overall no doubt, but on this play, we flat out were lucky.
i'd love to see a mash-up of all of ziggy's play's. i'd love to contribute, but i'm not that smart or savvy.
thanks, though to dagger and everyone here – this is the single smartest steelers web page and i love coming here!!!

Moreno was only picked by the ref because Hoke dropped into the zone and bumped Moreno. This forced Moreno deeper and caused him to get picked by the ref.
