Offensive Breakdown: Redskins vs Titans
By Dillweed | August 12, 2007
First, I would like to credit Brian over at the University of Michigan’s MGOBLOG for the idea to chart games play by play like this. It really gives you an understanding and insight into the game that you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to appreciate. Secondly, I’m only charting for as long as the majority of the first team stays in. After that I see no point to keep going. This one goes to the end of the first half. Click the “read more” button at the bottom of the chart to see all of the Redskins possessions. Enjoy.
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 18 | 1st and 10 | I-Form, Twins | Run behind RT | Betts | 1 |
| Jansen gets blown back and Rabach misses his block on the LB at the 2nd level and that’s what ultimately destroys the play. (Rabach -1) | |||||
| Skins 19 | 2nd and 9 | I-Form, 3 Wide | Run Middle | Betts | 1 |
| Wade leaves his man to attack the 2nd level, Sellers doesn’t pick up the block. (Sellers -1) | |||||
| Skins 20 | 3rd and 8 | Ace offset, 3 Wide | Pass, Hitch | Moss | 9 |
| Offsides declined, Moss gets a HUGE cushion to work with. | |||||
| Skins 29 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass, Hook | Randle El | 0 |
| Great protection. Randle El was open too, Campbell is just too high. | |||||
| Skins 29 | 2nd and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pump fake, Draw | Betts | 7 |
| Saunders genius at work. I bit at the fake on that one too, and I’m watching in slow motion, Rabach misses everyone again. | |||||
| Skins 36 | 3rd and 3 | Ace offset, 3 Wide | Pass, Out | Randle El | 15 |
| Thomas got owned, but it was after the ball was about to be released so whatever. Man our guys are getting open and that gets us 2/2 on 3rd downs. | |||||
| Titans 44 | 1st and 10 | I-Form, 2 Wide | Run behind RT | Betts | -3 |
| Titans call the perfect defense. Hope comes on a blitz from the weak side as Wade pulls away from it. | |||||
| Titans 47 | 2nd and 13 | Ace offset, 3 Wide | Pass | Sack | - |
| Another blitz from the secondary right at Heyer and he decides to follow the DE who stunts away from him. Leaving the blitzer (Fuller) untouched, result is a Campbell fumble. (Heyer -2 for allowing clean hit on Campbell and not picking up the blitz.) | |||||
| Drive: Fumble ends it. 35 yards total. 4 runs (0 left, 2 middle, 2 right) and 4 passes, pretty balanced. Campbell: 2 completions, 1 incomplete, 0 drops. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 20 | 1st and 10 | I-Form, 2 Wide | Pass | Incomplete | 0 |
| Campbell had 2 guys wide open underneath with Betts and Sellers, instead he tries to force it downfield and pass ends up getting defended. (Campbell – B.D.) | |||||
| Skins 20 | 2nd and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Run Middle | Cartwright | 1 |
| Wade pulls and…..whiffs. I think he tries to block the same guy that Thomas already engaged with (Wade -1.) | |||||
| Skins 21 | 3rd and 9 | Ace, 2 TE | Pass | Sack | -10 |
| And cue circus music. Jansen fails to pick up the stunt at the line and Cooley fails at the basics of blocking. Hilarity ensues. (Jansen -1, Cooley -2 for not even blocking the guy for a freakin second.) | |||||
| Drive: Déjà vu. At least this time we recovered the fumble. -9 yards total. 1 run (Middle) and 2 passes. Campbell: 0 completions, 1 incomplete, 0 drops. Should’ve checked down once. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 20 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Run behind LT | Cartwright | 3 |
| Wow, finally our first run to the left and coincidently our first display of some good run blocking. Especially by Wade (Wade +1) | |||||
| Skins 23 | 2nd and 7 | Ace, 2 TE | Run behind LT | Cartwright | 4 |
| Cartwright is a beast…he squeezes through a hole that was barely there. | |||||
| Skins 27 | 3rd and 3 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass, Fly | Moss | 39 |
| Moss just owned some 2nd year corner named Finnegan…awesome. Pocket was collapsing fast on that play too. | |||||
| Titans 34 | 1st and 10 | I-Form, 2 TE strong | Pass | Incomplete | 0 |
| Heyer struggles, but it’s against Vanden Bosch so that’s understood. None of this matters as it was a nice pocket and Campbell had forever to throw. | |||||
| Titans 34 | 2nd and 10 | I-Form, Twins | Run behind RT | Cartwright | 1 |
| Cooley gets pushed back into Cartwright and his man makes the tackle. Cooley really does kinda suck at blocking. (Cooley -1) | |||||
| Titans 33 | 3rd and 9 | Ace, 3 Wide | Scramble | Campbell | 4 |
| Jansen gets owned by Haynesworth and Campbell is forced to leave the pocket. He may have had Cooley open underneath but it wouldn’t have gotten a 1st. (Jansen -1) | |||||
| Drive: We finally end a drive without a TO. Missed FG is the outcome. 51 yards total. I’m not counting scrambles as runs since it’s a designed pass and it’s hard to grade O-line run blocking on a busted play. 3 runs (2 left, 0 middle, 1 right) and 2 passes. Campbell: 1 completion, 1 incomplete, 0 drops. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 20 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Run Middle | Cartwright | 4 |
| Opening offensive drive of the 2nd quarter for the Skins and Heyer just bulldozes a couple of Titans into a pile. (Heyer +1) | |||||
| Skins 24 | 2nd and 6 | I-Form, Twins | Run Middle | Cartwright | 3 |
| Wow, Buges must’ve said something special at the break….like ‘you guys suck.’ Wade pulls to the middle and sets up a NICE block for Cartwright to run behind. (Wade +1) | |||||
| Skins 27 | 3rd and 3 | Ace, 2 TE | Pass, Deep Out | Incomplete | 0 |
| Campbell is just too far out wide for Espy…who The Greek thinks is a WR to watch out for this year. | |||||
| Drive: 3 and out…still better than a TO and our O-line stepped it up that drive. 7 yards total. 2 runs (both middle) and 1 pass. Campbell: 1 incompletion. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 14 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 2 TE | Run behind RT | Cartwright | -1 |
| Why is Campbell still in the game? Anyways…run goes to the right and it’s more of the same. Cartwright has nowhere to go. | |||||
| Skins 13 | 2nd and 11 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass, Screen | Cartwright | 10 |
| Nice blocking convoy set up with Rabach, Thomas, and Wade. Rabach is the only one to actually block though. (Rabach +1) | |||||
| QB sneak, Campbell picks up the yard by basically falling forward. Marshall Faulk says he’s impressed by Campbell’s toughness today….yeah, I guess. NOW TAKE HIM OUT OF THE GAME. | |||||
| Skins 25 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass, Play Action | Espy | 19 |
| Skins go after rookie Michael Griffin and find a nice hole in the zone coverage. | |||||
| Skins 44 | 1st and 10 | I-Form weak, 2WR | Pass, Play Action | Incomplete | 0 |
| Randle El lines up in the slot and finds a hole in the coverage. Pass is there but A.R.E. gets nailed and ball comes loose. | |||||
| Skins 44 | 2nd and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Run, Draw (mid) | Blaylock | -5 |
| Another blitz from the secondary and Heyer fails to pick it up again. He blocks down and ends up blocking nobody. (Heyer -1) | |||||
| Skins 39 | 3rd and 15 | Gun, 2RB, 3WR | Pass, Deep In | Incomplete | 0 |
| Pass is dropped. Credit for the drop goes to McAddley….and you’re fired buddy. Great protection. I got to start giving credit for that. | |||||
| Drive: A couple of nice plays there. 24 total yards. 3 runs (0 left, 2 middle, 1 right) and 4 passes. Campbell: 2 completions, 0 incomplete, 2 drops. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 39 | 1st and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass | Incomplete | 0 |
| Thomas’ guy switches with the DE and Jansen can’t make the adjustment. Somebody should’ve been open by now though. Hard to blame Jansen here, but his guy was the reason Campbell got flushed out of the pocket. Play results in a throw away (Jansen -1/2) | |||||
| Skins 39 | 2nd and 10 | Ace, 3 Wide | Pass | Incomplete | 0 |
| Jansen gets owned this time and it’s 100% his fault. Odom bull rushes him and play results in a batted ball. (Jansen -1) | |||||
| Skins 39 | 3rd and 10 | Gun, 4 Wide | Pass, Dump off | Blaylock | 6 |
| Odom pushes Jansen back….arrrgggggghhhh what the f$%@! I hope Jansen is just unmotivated for the game. Anyways, his ineptitude forces Campbell to stop looking downfield, step up to avoid the pressure and dump the ball off. (Jansen -1.) | |||||
| Drive: wow….6 yards total. 0 runs and 3 passes. Campbell: 1 completions, 0 incomplete, 1 throw away, 1 batted ball. | |||||
| Yard Line | Down | Formation | Play Call | Player | Yards |
| Skins 18 | 1st and 10 | Gun, 4 Wide | Pass, Screen | Penalty | -5 |
| Good blocking downfield for the screen though. | |||||
| Skins 13 | 1st and 15 | Ace, 3 Wide | Run, Pump draw | Blaylock | 14 |
| Yeah whatever. Halftime. | |||||
| Drive: Doesn’t count. Brunell opens up the next drive and to prevent myself from gouging out my eyes, we end the recap here. | |||||
Offensive Line
| Player | +/- | Notes |
| Heyer | 1/3 | Failed to pick up the DB blitz twice, one of which left Campbell flattened. Came out strong in the run game in the 2nd quarter though. |
| Wade | 2/1 | Played relatively well…especially with the run blocking. Wade and Heyer both did good enough pushing the line of scrimmage forward. |
| Rabach | 1/1 | Decent performance. I did notice him hitting the second level a lot though. Good hustle…especially when you consider it’s only preseason. |
| Thomas | 0/0 | Did his job. Didn’t see any mental mistakes on stunts or LB blitzes. Did a good job in pass protection…couldn’t find any mistakes in the run blocking either. |
| Jansen | 0/4.5 | Good lord. Got handled by multiple Titan defenders. Haynesworth and Odom especially. And runs that went his way got stuffed. |
| Cooley | 0/3 | Just could not block early. Stepped it up some later on in the 2nd quarter so maybe it’s nothing to worry about. |
| Sellers | 0/1 | Was in the game a LOT. I liked his performance overall. Solid in the run game…he did better than what his numbers here show. |
Run Blocking
| Left | Middle | Right |
| 2 runs for 7 yards (3.5 ypc) | 6 runs for 5 yards (0.8 ypc) | 4 runs for -2 yds (-0.5 ypc) |
Jansen (and Thomas to an extent) should really be embarrassed. They got outplayed by Heyer (a rookie) and Wade (first year as a full time starter.) The runs up the middle ‘yards per carry’ (ypc) is a little misleading as plays like QB sneaks and failed draws really skew the average. Cartwright is underrated.
Pass Blocking
Overall, the pass blocking was fine except for Heyer not able to pick up on DB blitzes (which is understandable since it was his first start), Cooley not blocking (not shocking as he is a pass-catching TE), and Jansen just not showing up (it is preseason.)
Campbell
| Completions | Incomplete | Drops by WR | Throw Aways | Batted Balls |
| 6 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
0-10 yards: 3
10-20 yards: 2
20+ yards: 1
Really not much to go off of here for Campbell. More completions vs incompletions is a good thing. He still struggles with the deep out, but he was on point with the 39 yarder to Moss. The real story of the passing game was the protection.

Jerry-
HAHA. I think we all feel the same way. But wow, I’m still blown away.
Dillweed is trying to convince me to do this same exact breakdown for the Steeler games. Why do I suddenly feel like I have a term paper to write and I waited until the last second to start. I think I might go ahead and do this as well. If the response is good I’ll keep doing it. People seem to really enjoy it. I think it’s information you won’t find anywhere else on the internet.

Awesome job Dillweed, although I can’t see myself doing something as insane as this! lol
Reading this as a Steelers fan, I’d love to see a breakdown of Steelers games like this, so get on it Dagger!

My friend, you have NO IDEA. lol.
I just finished this chart and I’ll have it up shortly. Producing this chart beat me down mentally and physically. I’m going on Injured Reserve after I post this to the site. In fact, I think I hate football now. haha.
My next blog entry is going to be about hairdo’s again. That was so much easier…and it makes me popular with the ladies.

Dilweed, amazing chart. Haven’t seen anything like this before. Can you send Saunders a copy?

Please do it again.

[...] needs to be linked – Dillweed at Post Game Heroes goes through and reviews the offensive line performance on every play of the 1st half. Just great stuff. I tried to do this once last year and I know it [...]

Dagger took the words out of my mouth. This is an insane breakdown. This is my first time reading this blog, but it immediately becomes my football blog of choice. Outstanding!

This is incredible. Silently I hope for this to become a regular feature which I will read and encourage others to as well. If it does not I will accept it bitterly, shaking my tiny fists of rage at the sky wondering why why damn you why?

BREAKING NEWS:
Dillweed has confirmed to me that you WILL get this chart EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
In a related story:
His girlfriend heard about the news and broke up with him.
but seriously…the response has been so great it will absolutely be a weekly feature. It’ll be fun to break down the conclusions after 6 weeks or so and then after the season to see the TRENDS of the Skins offense. See where they were successful running the ball, see all sorts of cool stats that we’d normally not have in one comprehensive list like this.
Dillweed’s loss is our gain! Who needs a girlfriend anyways when you can stare at my POSH SPICE post all day long.
August 14th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
Thank you so much! This is my new favorite website. That ruled dude. I really hope you keep this up.
I can’t even pay for a breakdown like that anywhere on the internet. Your girlfriend/wife will leave you though if you keep this up, that’s no joke. I’m sure she’ll be missed.
Hail to the Redskins!
August 14th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
You can borrow my GF if you need one. Keep up the good work!
August 14th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
That is incredible Dillweed. I have never seen anything that comprehensive on the internet. couple weeks of that and there will all kinds of stats and trends we can ponder. Never been here before, but I am sold. Thanks so much!! Go Skins!!!
August 14th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
well done, thank you.
September 19th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
TY Dillweed for the hard work and honest commentary. Sorry about the gf, but if she was truly your gf, she would have understood the passion that lurks within every Redskins fan and made her nighttime wardrobe would consist entirely of Redskins’ jerseys…..
