The entire premise of the argument is BS despite what Troy says unless you're running a hurry-up (not necessarily a no-huddle) all the time. Seriously, Arians was worried about the offense being TOO GOOD for the defensive scheme's unique intesity style and then came up with telling Ben to run the play clock down (which I'm not even sure they do quite as much as is implied) and not get into a rhythm somewhat ON PURPOSE as a solution? Anyway, if the offense has a five-play, 2/ 1/2 minute drive and then the defense gives up a 16-play, 9-minute drive it's the offense's fault? If the offense keeps having short-time drives for a whole game, fine, it makes some sense, but I'd like to hear from Troy how the Steelers defense wears down differently, specifically, any more than any other defense.

I get why the Steelers aren't playing no-huddle all the time, but it isn't gonna kill the D if the Steelers sometimes snap the ball with 4 or 5 seconds left on the play clock instead of 1. I'm not asking for a no-huddle, but what I do ask is that the opposing pass rushers not know exactly when the ball is going to be snapped. Under Arians, they do.

Also, let Ben call the damn plays, because Arians doesn't know how to do it.

What is so unique about the Steelers' defensive style that makes it any less effective if it's out there too long than any other defense? To me this idea also seems to contradict somewhat the "conservative"-ish characteristics ascribed to recent LeBeau defenses -- keep everything in front of you, don't give up big plays, make the offense move it in small chunks (thus taking a LONG time when they do), eventually the QB will make a mistake when Harrison gets in his face, etc. Any defense is less effective the longer it's out there. Why specifically is this more so for the Steelers other than that it has been described as "attacking" and "high energy"? Teams that don't blitz a lot woul d prefer to be on the field more on defense? And wouldn't Troy like some more points on the board as much as an extra two minutes of Gatorade time? A touchdown or a running-the-clock-down?

Consider the timing of the two defensive touchdowns in the 2008 playoffs -- They were more than just "oh, the couple of touchdowns that defenses score in playoff runs." Especially important when the anti-Arianites are often called out for focusing on total points and ignoring context. The 31-29 Jacksonville game -- Ben had three awful picks including a pick-six / MJD ran back a kickoff to the one-yard line / "goin' for two from the twelve" / 3rd-and-6 QB draw with a $100 million QB & the season on the line. The 31-25 Green Bay game -- pick-six, three total turnovers, missed connection on wide open TD, first-week-of-training-camp-style confusion on last possession w/ season on the line.

The offense seems to simultaneously overachieve and contribute to the defense's underachieving in the playoffs.

The 29-23 Denver game -- defense was an utter disaster. But 23 points by the offense WAS underachieving in that game, although statistically they put up a whopping three more points (there's those total points again!) than their average this year.

Arians is great at designing passing plays, and designs some great running plays as well. On the flip side, his playcalling is often too predictable or just plain stupid. Overall, Arians is no worst than most of the other offensive coordinators.

When the rumors started up again about Arians retiring or being forced out after the season, it seemed almost certain that Norv Turner would be fired. I hoped the rumors were true so that the Steelers could pursue Turner.

The Steelers made this decision AFTER it was public that the Chargers were retaining Turner. Now that no clear upgrade is available, it was a bad move for the Steelers to oust Arians.

I would be curious to hear in what ways Tomlin was outcoached. Besides some bad playclock management I didn't really see that.

So happy to see an update to this site!

You make an interesting point about our offense in the playoffs. I have never been a fan of Arians but I try really hard not to be a "basher" and to look at everything from a well informed perspective.

What frustrated me about Arians late this season was that it was obvious that Ben was not 100% and Bruce was not able to adjust. I like to see coordinators get creative, and even if it fails miserably, at least they were trying... I've hated for years that Lebeau sticks with his usual formula to play the Patriots and we get picked apart every time... I LOVED his gameplan against the Pats this season. We bumped receivers at the line all day and didn't give up the underneath stuff that kills us. Was it risky? Hell yes! Had we seen NE again you can be they would've tested us deep the same way the Broncos did, to counter the bump and run coverage... But I loved that Lebeau saw an opportunity and tried something different, and it worked.

In that same game, Ben played a lot of "take what they give you" hitting check downs and quick hits, and it worked great! That's what I would've liked to have seen because Wallace and Brown are more than capable of running slants and crosses, not just bombs. Now, I realize the Pats pass D is abysmal, but I liked the gameplan.

I realize that Ben's biggest weapon is his ability to extend the play and find a man for a big play... but I think he's also very good at sitting in the pocket, going through his reads, and finding the open man... When Ben has time he's a very good passer, not just a gunslinger.

We've been playing with fire for years by not building the OL and calling plays that get the ball out quickly, and we finally got burned late this season... If we don't adjust soon, it might be a more serious injury. If we continue like this Ben will have 2-3 years left of effective football, tops.

If you all don't already know, Steeler's Depot is pretty good with regular news and in-depth game break-downs each week. I've been filling my time with that site since this one mysteriously became quiet.

Hopefully this site gets up and running again..? Dutch, Dagger...anyone?

I didnt say they were better but possibly as good as or to a solid extent. About trading mike to a elite lt, u are right,, who would give out an elite left tackle for mike, but who knows, maybe u add something else, a pick, maybe the guy is not in great relationship with his team, m u never know..

When they were the sixth seed in 2005, no one thought they'd win the SB either. Same with GB last year. All they need to do is make the playoffs. They don't need to dominate every opponent. They just need to get to the post-season...then anything can happen.

You are right - LTs are much more valuable than WRs...so why would Wallace command an elite LT in return for a trade? At best, you'll get an average LT. No good. If ES and AB were better, wouldn't they be starting ahead of Wallace?

And makes absolutely no sense to have the kind of WR set we have if Big Ben is not being properly protected at the same time that we get a good running game going..

The only reason this team dont win the SB everyyear is the below average OL, drives me crazy.. But Im sure we will have a good OL when Troy n Silverback are old n Woodley turns to a NT.. Lol

i think what u are saying is quite valid, I just dont think its gonna be enough to win th SB this year, and im not worrried with the D at all, but this OL, their lucky charms are long gone... Why do u think people get LT higher then WR n RBs? i would trade wallace for a pro bowl LT or even Guard at this stage in a pinch .. Do u really think he is thaaat much betterr then ES n AB? Good WRS, just as RBs are falling from the sky this days..

Everyone calm down. Woodley is fine. The defense is fine. Harrison is rounding into form after back surgery. The o-line health and quality is a legitimate concern, but the o-line was sub-par last year too. AB's kick returns are going to put up 7 multiple times this year. The Steelers actually have a dangerous returner.

There is no need to do anything drastic like trade 88 or AB. Trading Wallace would be the height of stupidity at this point. I'd worry about execution rather than personnel and adding/subtracting players. The squad is set.

The Steelers have not won the turnover battle once this year, and they are 2-1. They sky is not falling.

the only thing he can do is the bull rush, totally one dimensional, I never liked the resigning of him. try Timmons at his spot for 60 minutes for 3 weeks and the guy will explode in sacks..

Limas Sweed is bad, but Jonathan Scott is bad, and it his production affects every play. And Scott is awful.

He looks fatter than last year. His feet used to be better.

Woodley is definitely not going to get much better, while his size is ok and the ability to play OLB is there, he hasn't shown he refuses to learn the position. He would be a good DE elsewhere but he just signed a ridiculous contract. Also I think it would have been worth it to see them fill Woodley spot this year.

If this team wants to win this year superbowl they need to make some extreme moves, one would be an agressive approach to acquire an elite LT right now, we have 3 amazing young Wide Recievers that look like they can more or less do the same thing, I mean who is to say Antonio Brown or Manny Sanders cannot play the role of Wallace right now or in the very near future? I bet they can do it or at least to a very solid extent. Man, I tell u what , u want to win THIS SB? Trade Wallace for an elite LT from some bullshit team right now, I dont know if there is an elite LT in Cincy or Seattle or the Chiefs or even Titans, I dont know but if there is this guy out there, do it, I prefer this team with an elite Left Tackle than a good on the rise Wide out that actually looks very much like two others we already have... I mean we have a guy like Jericho Cotchery in a spot he will not even play right now, we dont need those 3 kids, one of them has to be traded because we will NOt even a Superbowl with Jonathan Scott or Trei Essex protecting Ben's blind side, thats a certainty..

About Lamaar Woodley, I tell u whats happening, he is never gonna get slimmer, and faster and agile as he once was because he does not have the genetics for that to happen, on the contrary, he has a perpetual tendency to get heavier n less agile, its so clear from watching him around, he should be a DE or play for another scheme, in our scheme we need someone faster like Greg Lloyd and James Harrison, thats why I always wanted to see Timmons on the other side of Harrison, that would be the most serious pass rushing tandem in the century. Lamar was good as a rookie but time will do no good for his body and the staff should know it, but it seems like they dont and they are to conservative and stubborn to make "unorthodox" modifications so, we wil have to watch Woodley struggle as he get less n less agile.. : /

I never understood one thing, why is Sean Kugler a good OL coach anyway? Why such a bad team as Buffalo was when we signed Sean didnt keep him around if he was a good OL coach anyway? To expensive? LOL I bet the Bills dont miss him now, do they?! I also bet it was Bruce Arians aka "Bad Jazz" idea, and to make things worse he even brought in our now dear buddy Jonathan Scott, "the worst starting left tackle in the league"! Seriously, this team is playing with fire, it cant work good for us this year like that .. there is NO WAY this team will win this season superbowl with the tackle AND guard situation right now, and can u imagine the disaster it would be if Maurkice Pouncey gets seriously injured? U know it can happen, it happened before, if he is out we are done, and probably there are only 2 other players we could say the same (Ben and Troy)...
And I keep asking myself year after year why the problems remain the same also year after year ... I hope Mike Tomlin have enjoyed his first few years around 'cause he is probably facing a few others full of heat, loads of heat!

Sanity check...let's look at the next 3 games:

Baltimore - @ Tenn and St. Louis, home for the Jets
Steelers - Seattle, @ Colts, @ Houston

Jets will be tough, and going to Tennessee is never a cake walk...especially after such an emotional high of a game for Baltimore. Can they be bug-eyed again this week? Might be a trap game.

The Steelers should handle Seattle and the Colts. Houston is going to be interesting. Either team could wind up 2-2 or 3-1. I wonder if the sky would still be falling if the Ravens went 2-2 and the Steelers went 3-1.

The second match up @ Pitt is a Sunday night game. No better stage than that (except for the playoffs) to correct something.

They came out treating the game as their Super Bowl. We came out like it was just another game. That was the biggest reason for the result, imo. It's not like we have been THAT much better than the Ravens. Pretty much every time we have played them over the past few seasons, the game was a total toss up that could have went either way. One team was ready to play, one wasn't. Not a chance the Steelers are that bad, nor are the Ravens that good. I think this butt kicking will do us some good. Reality check/wake up call right off the bat.

You hit 'em all. Impressive points Sir.

Point number 11 is what irks me the most. You couldn't have said it better though. The Ravens had had enough of getting their asses whooped and they prepared all offseason for this "Super Bowl" game. I had to turn the game off at half time. I definitely did not see this game getting any better. But you know what? I am glad the Ravens romped the Steelers, hopefully it gave the Steelers a quick glimpse of reality. This Steelers team needed a swift kick to the pants the first game of the season. And I hope it did them good. I think a lot of Steelers players took some time off with their contract extensions.

But, let's put this into perspective now. It was the first game of the season (although, in my opinion an important one). I'd rather see the Steelers lose the first game of the season against the Ravens than see them lose to the Ravens in a playoff game. Did we really think we were going to bludgeon the Ravens every game until the end of the world?

most fans i know agree that we have been successful in spite of our offense, not because of it. you're totally on about leaning on the D but when the O coughs up the ball 7 times even the best D can't win it. i still think we can't judge either team by a season opening blow out. no way the ravens can sustain that bug-eyed frenzy all year.

All I want to know is why didn't our FO go after a guy like Mckinnie? He seemed to be a huge upgrade for bmore and he is way better than Jonathan Scott. We could have improved ourselves and hurt the Ravens.

I hate to see us getting beat by guys we could have had. It was great that we could lock up some of our guys but we had some holes that we could have filled. I also worry that we might have overpaid Woodley.

all good points in this column. no need to panic or judge offseason moves by either team after a blow out game. the ravens are a team that feed off of bug-eyed emotion and yesterday was the perfect storm for that. the steelers came out flat and couldn't get it going. yesterday was the ravens superbowl and it showed. we've seen it before from the browns and cincy. good thing it's a marathon and not a sprint. the steelers will get back to work and play great football this season. the ravens will have to try to sustain a bug-eyed frenzy but it will fizzle quickly. just my opinion based on history.

I would not wait one single game to change things, I would give more snaps to Heyward n Hood right away, and never use Keisel n Smith together ever again. I would also be way way exotic with the D, I would not wait until who knows when to show the "secret packages" , I would bring it all over, because we are not the best D anymore, we dont have that luxury to hide stuff, to play vanilla here n there anymore.. I would also look desperatly to a new left tackle and another solution for RG, because I tell u, we will NOT get to the superbowl this year with this starting O line of today, forget it... and Bruce Arians, man, I would give this guy such a hard time inside a room if I were Tomlin .. oh well .. I guess some of u are ok with a transition year, Im not, I want a ring every year, sorry that's me..

I hope this game was not "just a game" and people will really wake up and start changing some things, because this team really really need some changes if we wanna maintain dominance in this ever more competitive n unpredictable game.
We will not keep getting trips to the SB repeating the same philosophy of the past years wich is basically relying on a must be perfect Defense that is absolutely tired of that responsability and an always inconsistent delusional offense with one of the worst O Lines in the league, forget it, its over, wont happen again!! Things change and I tell u what there are at least 30 teams hungrier for a ring then half of this already succesfull old team of ours is.
I hope Im wrong and we will win it all this year, but I dont think so, unless we see a lot more aggressiveness coming out of Tomlin in terms of changing things drastically, forgetting the glorious past and worrying about the absolutely unknown future..

Dagger, you as usual said it all!
I believe the attrocity of a game this was is almost all due to bad coaching. That they were better prepared in all phases is obvious (coaches fault ofc) and I think to lose the game is not the problem, the problem is being teared apart, humilliated in a way we will hardly be able to ever payback. Some players didnt play well, of course not, but why? Bad Coaching!
We and everysingle DC in the AFC know our team has some serious n evident leaks, they are famous already, they shouldnt, we cannot carry those problems for years n years, thats just stupid, Dick Lebeau is great, but his D has the same fundamental problem for years n years, why cant he do something about it? Is it just impossible or what? Is it absolutely impossible to get at least ONE Cornerback to play opposite of Ike Taylor ever? How many hundreds of corners we will have to draft to find one? But I wont get into the players now, actually I shouldnt even be talking about the Defense much, what about the offense? What about the fucking O Line that is even worse than last year? How can the coaches n FO let that happen? What are they trying to prove? That all teams drafting Tackles n Guards over RBs n WRs in the very first draft positions are retarded? Bruce Arians is the retarded, that's a fact!!!

Im afraid everyone in our team was in a bizarre pedestal of grandure coming in today..

Well hopefully they fell from it hard and it is hurting pretty bad because our performance today was the most pathetic for any team today (by the expectations), we played as the worst team in the league and everyone else is virtually laughing on us!

Vick was a product of a cake schedule last season. He played the Redskins, Jaguars and Texans, three of the worst pass defenses in the league (Texans were ranked 32nd in 2010). All of this talk about him being elite after being a career 79 rated passer prior to 2010 is BS. Until he is consistently good as a passer he is not elite.
